Toyota Confirms New V-8 Engine for GR Supercar Launching Soon
BREAKING: Toyota has confirmed a groundbreaking new V-8 engine is set to debut in its upcoming GR-badged supercar, scheduled to launch in early December 2025. This announcement came during an interview at the ongoing 2025 Japan Mobility Show, where Toyota’s powertrain president, Takashi Uehara, unveiled details about the highly anticipated engine.
The new twin-turbo V-8 will significantly enhance the performance of Toyota’s flagship vehicle, expected to exceed 400 horsepower. Uehara emphasized the V-8’s foundation lies within a modular gasoline engine family, which also includes 1.5- and 2.0-liter units. The direct connection between this powerful eight-cylinder engine and the four-cylinder engines currently featured in models like the mid-engine GR Yaris M concept highlights Toyota’s innovative engineering approach.
Uehara confirmed that the V-8 will be part of a hybrid powertrain, but clarified that it will not be a plug-in hybrid. This aligns with the brand’s strategy to enhance performance while remaining mindful of emissions. He hinted that the luxury division, Lexus, will also benefit from this new engine, as it will power a production version of the recently unveiled Sport Concept.
In a striking revelation, Uehara stated, “You can expect—you see the Lexus new sports car? That is that…” This indicates a shared engineering effort between Toyota and Lexus, with the V-8 tuned differently for each brand. While Lexus may receive a more “gentle” version, Toyota’s GR flagship is likely to feature a “heavy-duty” configuration, particularly for racing applications like the GT3 race car.
The development of this V-8 engine is part of a broader trend among automakers, as AMG and Mercedes are also investing in high-performance engines, ensuring the V-8 remains a vital part of the automotive landscape. Meanwhile, BMW is tweaking its V-8 engines to comply with evolving emissions regulations, and Porsche is committed to keeping V-8s alive well into the 2030s.
As the automotive industry evolves, the introduction of Toyota’s V-8 engine underscores a commitment to performance and innovation, while also addressing environmental concerns. Enthusiasts and industry watchers are eager to see how this engine will influence the future of high-performance vehicles.
Stay tuned for more updates as Toyota prepares for the exciting reveal of this new powerhouse.
