UND Freshman Ollie Josephson Shines in OT Loss to Bulldogs

In a thrilling encounter at Ralph Engelstad Arena, University of North Dakota (UND) freshman Ollie Josephson made a significant impact despite the team’s 4-3 overtime loss to Minnesota Duluth in their National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) opener on October 13, 2023. Josephson scored his first collegiate goal and contributed an assist, showcasing his potential on the ice.

The Fighting Hawks struggled to find the back of the net, generating 19 shots on goal in the first two periods but failing to beat Minnesota Duluth’s sophomore goaltender Adam Gajan. With the Bulldogs leading 1-0 and facing a power play late in the second period, Josephson seized an opportunity. He intercepted a puck exiting the defensive zone, sprinted forward on a breakaway, and skillfully flicked it past Gajan, marking a memorable shorthanded goal.

Reflecting on his achievement, Josephson said, “Kind of got a lucky bounce, went past their defender and had a great play out of it. Felt really good, especially in a place like this. It was super special.” His goal energized the team, but UND ultimately fell short as Minnesota Duluth secured the win with a goal in the 3-on-3 overtime period.

Josephson’s contributions extended beyond scoring. He assisted senior forward Ben Strinden in tying the game with just over a minute left in regulation. Strinden praised Josephson’s performance, stating, “He’s had a great start so far. He hasn’t gotten the points he’s deserved, but they’re starting to come for him, and he’s a heck of a player.”

Undoubtedly, the young forward played a crucial role on the third line, partnering with sophomore Cody Croal and senior Tyler Young. This line was tasked with containing Minnesota Duluth’s top offensive trio, which included Max Plante, Zam Plante, and Jayson Shaugabay. Despite the Bulldogs’ offensive prowess, Josephson’s line effectively limited them to no 5-on-5 goals during their matchups.

Head coach Dane Jackson commended Josephson for his performance, emphasizing his effectiveness and skating ability. “His goal was really good. It was nice to see him create some offense, and I thought he was a really good two-way player for us,” Jackson remarked. Josephson was only on the ice for one goal against during the overtime period, demonstrating his defensive prowess.

As Josephson continues to adapt to the NCAA level, he has already made a mark with one goal and two assists in his first seven games. The Victoria, B.C., native transitioned to college hockey after a noteworthy career with the Red Deer Rebels in the Western Hockey League (WHL), where he served as captain and recorded 14 goals and 21 assists last season.

Drafted 105th overall by the Seattle Kraken in the 2024 NHL Draft, Josephson is embracing the challenges of the NCHC. He acknowledged the increased competition, stating, “It’s a really good league, definitely a step up from juniors. So just trying to get better every day and consistently improve my game has been big. I think it’s going well.”

As UND prepares for their next matchup, Josephson’s promising start and commitment to development will be crucial for the Fighting Hawks as they aim to improve their performance in the coming games.
