Joan M. Hakun, Beloved Allentown Matriarch, Passes Away at 84
BREAKING: Joan M. Hakun, a cherished matriarch from Allentown, has passed away at the age of 84. She died on November 9, 2025, at the Luther Crest Healthcare Center in South Whitehall Township, leaving a profound legacy of love and service.
Joan was married to her devoted husband, George Hakun III, for an incredible 63 years. Known for her nurturing spirit, she dedicated her life to family and community, having once worked as a Registered Nurse before becoming a homemaker. Joan was a proud graduate of Reading High School, the Reading Hospital School of Nursing, and Kutztown University.
Her passing is felt deeply by her family and friends, who remember her as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Joan is survived by her son, Mark G. Hakun (Maurann) of Gambrills, MD, and her grandchildren, including Monica Burnett (Jeff) of Layton, UT, and Marcella Hakun of Gambrills, MD. She also leaves behind her great-granddaughter, Emma Burnett, and daughter-in-law Cathy Hakun of Woodbine, MD, along with grandchildren Steven and Patrick Hakun.
Joan was an active member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Allentown, where she served as a Lector and contributed significantly to her community. She was known for her love of travel, reading, and classical music, and was a former member of the Allentown Garden Club.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, November 15, 2025, at 11 A.M. at St. Thomas More Catholic Church located at 1040 Flexer Ave, Allentown, PA 18103. A calling hour will precede the service, beginning at 10 A.M.. The service is expected to draw many who wish to pay their respects and celebrate her life.
Arrangements are being handled by the J.S. Burkholder Funeral Home in Allentown. Those wishing to offer condolences may visit www.jsburkholder.com. Contributions in Joan’s memory can be made to the church, reflecting her lifelong commitment to faith and community.
Joan M. Hakun’s legacy will live on in the hearts of those she loved and who loved her. Her commitment to family and community serves as a reminder of the impact one life can have on many.
