Langdon Area/Munich Clinches Region 2B Volleyball Title, Heads to State

UPDATE: In an electrifying match, defending state champion Langdon Area/Munich secured the Region 2B volleyball title on July 12, 2023, in Devils Lake, setting the stage for another state championship run. The Cardinals dominated the match with decisive set scores of 25-9, 25-15, 25-13, showcasing their prowess on the court.

After a strong start, Langdon Area/Munich faced a brief challenge, trailing 7-5 in the third set. However, the team quickly rallied to take control, propelled by an outstanding defense and powerful serving. “We were sparked by our defense tonight, there’s no question,” said head coach Rich Olson.

Key plays from Mya Swanson and Kemi Morstad helped propel the Cardinals to a commanding lead, with Morstad ultimately sealing the match with a crucial block. “We get along so well, and I think that helps a lot,” said senior Raeleigh Ratzlaff, praising the team’s chemistry and collective talent.

The Cardinals now boast an impressive record of 36-5, while Park River/Fordville-Lankin, despite the loss, remains competitive with a record of 22-14. “We know we can compete and play at that level,” said Park River/Fordville-Lankin coach Nicole Wollangk, who was named the Region 2B Coach of the Year.

As Langdon Area/Munich prepares for the state tournament, the shift to a three-class format this year adds a new layer of excitement. Coach Olson believes their teamwork and energy can propel them to victory again. “We’re playing for each other and that’s fun,” he stated.

In other tournament news, Benson County claimed a 3-1 victory over New Rockford-Sheyenne in the third-place match, setting up an opportunity for a state berth. Benson County will face the Region 1 runner-up on Saturday at 5 p.m. at the University of Jamestown.

As the volleyball season heats up, all eyes will be on Langdon Area/Munich as they aim for another state title, bringing with them a legacy of excellence and a strong desire to win.
