Dallas Morning News Hosts Urgent Community Event on Mexican Cuisine
UPDATE: The Dallas Morning News is set to host an urgent community event, “DFW Sabores en la Comunidad,” highlighting the rich tapestry of authentic Mexican cuisine in North Texas. Scheduled for December 11 at 6:00 p.m., this Spanish-language event will take place at the Vickery Park Library, located at 8333 Park Lane, Dallas, TX.
Renowned senior food reporter Imelda García will moderate a panel featuring three talented local Mexican chefs. They will discuss the vital role of food and culture within the community, emphasizing that Mexican cuisine extends far beyond just tacos. García stated, “Beyond the dishes and their history, this series is about the people who cook them.”
The DFW Sabores project has showcased over 30 dishes from various Mexican states, including Oaxaca and Jalisco. Attendees will enjoy complimentary food samples from restaurants featured in the project, enriching their experience with signature dishes.
This event is part of a series of community listening sessions initiated by The News, aimed at fostering dialogue in both English and Spanish. Earlier this year, a similar Spanish-language event brought attention to critical issues surrounding mental health access in Dallas’ Hispanic community, where approximately 42% of the population identifies as Hispanic, according to U.S. Census data.
Managing editor Amy Hollyfield emphasized the newsroom’s commitment to building trust within the Hispanic community, stating, “Food is an equalizer to bring people together.” She expressed that this event is essential for showcasing the love for Mexican food and culture.
The evening will kick off with check-in at 6:00 p.m., followed by the panel discussion at 6:30 p.m. and a Q&A session at 7:15 p.m.. The event is free and open to all, with free parking available. While RSVPs are encouraged, anyone interested in exploring the depth of Mexican cuisine is welcome to attend.
