Bill Maher Warns Democrats Risk Becoming ‘Ghost Brand’ Like Sears
UPDATE: On the latest episode of “Real Time” airing on October 31, 2025, host Bill Maher urgently warned viewers that the Democratic Party risks becoming a “ghost brand” akin to the fallen retail giant Sears. Maher’s comments come as the party faces its lowest approval ratings in 35 years, with a staggering 63% unfavorable rating.
Maher articulated his fears, stating, “The cautionary tale of the ghost brand is an important one… I fear the Democratic Party is at risk of becoming a ghost brand too.” He emphasized that just as Sears once dominated the market, the Democrats once held significant power in Congress and the Supreme Court. However, the party’s current standing raises alarms about its relevancy in American politics.
Reflecting on the decline of Sears, which at one point represented 1% of the entire U.S. economy and 41% of the country’s appliance market, Maher expressed concern that the Democratic Party is following a similar trajectory. “What happened? I don’t know. What happened to Sears?” he questioned, drawing parallels between the two entities.
Maher further illustrated his point by referencing another iconic brand, Playboy, which he claims has also lost its way. He stated, “Like the Democratic Party, Playboy decided they didn’t need straight men anymore… and predictably, sales collapsed.” This analogy served to underscore the urgency for the Democratic Party to reconnect with its base or risk fading into obscurity.
“I’m just saying Democrats need to get their s— together because America needs two political parties, not one party and one Halloween store,”
Maher quipped, highlighting the importance of a viable opposition in U.S. politics.
As the political landscape shifts, Democratic strategists are reportedly desperate for a turnaround, with some even humorously suggesting they might as well start “praying” for a depression to boost their polling. This dire state of affairs demands immediate attention from party leaders as the upcoming elections approach.
With Maher’s provocative remarks resonating in the current political climate, viewers are left to ponder whether the Democratic Party can revive its identity and relevance or if it will continue to drift towards becoming just another forgotten brand in the annals of American history.
