New 22-Foot Sculpture Debuts on 101 Freeway in East Hollywood

BREAKING: A stunning new 22-foot-tall sculpture has just been unveiled on the 101 Freeway in East Hollywood, capturing the essence of the film industry. This eye-catching artwork, made of galvanized steel, features three massive filmstrips and is designed to reflect the dynamic flow of traffic.

The sculpture is part of the U.S. Route 1010 Lankershim to Beaudry Beautification Project, a crucial element of California’s broader Clean California initiative, aimed at enhancing state highways. Located on the median south of Melrose Avenue, this new installation signifies a commitment to both art and community beautification.

Constructed with laser-cut perforated metal, the sculpture not only stands 23 feet wide but is also supported by 22-foot-tall steel columns. It was brought to life by the Caltrans District 7’s Design team and fabricated by Benchmark Arts, with the project coordinated by Yakar, ensuring a seamless integration into the urban landscape.

The entire project, costing $5.87 million, included extensive landscaping enhancements along 8.7 miles of the 101, between Lankershim Boulevard and North Beaudry Avenue. The landscaping improvements were completed last year, making this filmstrip sculpture the final touch in a revitalization that promises to enrich the community’s cultural identity.

Colleen Park, Public Information Officer for Caltrans District 7, confirmed the completion of this transformative project, emphasizing its significance for local residents and visitors alike. “This artwork will serve as a landmark for the area, celebrating Los Angeles’s iconic film heritage,” she stated.
