New York Health Commissioner Issues Urgent Flu Season Guidance
ALBANY, N.Y. — Urgent health advisory just issued! As flu season approaches, the New York State Department of Health warns residents to prepare for potential health challenges ahead. Jim McDonald, M.D., M.P.H., the state’s health commissioner, confirms that the CDC predicts a moderate flu season this year, but emphasizes that flu seasons are notoriously unpredictable.
With the flu virus expected to circulate alongside RSV and lingering COVID-19, McDonald urges residents to take immediate action. “The best way to protect yourself is to get the flu vaccine and maintain good hand hygiene,” he advises. As October marks the peak start for RSV, he highlights its danger, especially to infants, stating, “RSV is one of the leading causes of hospital admissions for infants. Having a vaccine to prevent it is a game-changing public health tool.”
The health commissioner also raises concerns about misinformation online, stating, “Too many of us are listening to unqualified sources for health advice.” He urges the public to consult healthcare professionals for reliable information. “Your doctor knows best,” McDonald asserts, warning against the consumption of unhealthy food, which can adversely affect both physical and mental health.
Residents should remain vigilant for symptoms common to flu, COVID-19, and RSV, which often include cough, fever, and runny nose. McDonald notes, “It’s crucial to recognize who is most vulnerable—the very young and the elderly.” He stresses the importance of listening to your body: “If you’re feeling unwell, don’t hesitate to get tested.”
As part of maintaining health this season, McDonald recommends staying hydrated, consuming fruits and vegetables, and using medications like Tylenol to manage fever. If symptoms worsen, he encourages prompt consultation with a physician or a visit to the hospital.
This urgent public health message serves as a critical reminder for New Yorkers to protect themselves and their loved ones this flu season. With the changing dynamics of viral infections, proactive measures are essential. Share this information to ensure that everyone is informed and prepared.
