Thousands Honor Clara Luper with National Sit-in Plaza Dedication
URGENT UPDATE: Thousands gathered in downtown Oklahoma City on November 1, 2023, to dedicate the Clara Luper National Sit-in Plaza, a powerful tribute to a pivotal moment in the Civil Rights Movement. This historic event honors Clara Luper, a courageous educator and activist, who led a groundbreaking sit-in at Katz Drug Store on August 19, 1958.
The dedication ceremony featured stirring performances from local choirs and heartfelt remarks from prominent figures, including Marilyn Luper Hildreth, daughter of Clara Luper, and Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt. The plaza, located at the former site of Katz, showcases a striking 4-ton bronze lunch counter with life-sized depictions of Luper and the original 13 student “sit-inners.”
“For so long, this moment in Oklahoma City has been overlooked in the history books, yet it helped change the nation,” said Luper Hildreth. “This sculpture ensures that future generations will remember that ordinary young people, acting together, can create extraordinary change.”
The new plaza marks a significant milestone in recognizing the contributions of the original sit-inners who bravely fought for desegregation, inspiring similar movements across the country. The artistic installation took four years to complete, a collaborative effort by StudioEIS, an internationally acclaimed sculpture firm.
Elliot Schwartz, founder of StudioEIS, stated, “This project has been one of the most collaborative undertakings in our 50 years. The final work reflects the same spirit of unity that powered the sit-in movement.”
Community leaders, including Rev. Dr. Lee Cooper Jr. and project developer John Kennedy, emphasized the importance of remembering this landmark event. “May we never forget that we all have an opportunity to make a difference and that small actions can lead to big change,” said Kennedy.
The dedication ceremony was entirely funded through private donations, exemplifying community support for this important historical site. Notable contributors include the American Fidelity Foundation, Chickasaw Nation, and the Hobby Lobby.
As attendees explored the plaza, they were reminded of the impact that the original sit-in had on the fight for equality, a powerful message resonating loudly in today’s society. The plaza serves as a beacon of hope and a reminder that the struggle for justice continues.
This dedication is not just a celebration of the past; it is a clarion call for future generations to continue the work of heroes like Clara Luper. The community is urged to visit the plaza to engage with its rich history and reflect on the ongoing journey toward equality.
