UCF Suffers Staggering 30-3 Loss at Baylor, Faces Houston Next
UPDATE: The UCF Knights faced a crushing 30-3 defeat against the Baylor Bears on October 28, 2023, marking their seventh consecutive road loss. This disheartening outcome comes just two weeks after a strong performance against West Virginia, leaving fans and analysts questioning the team’s trajectory as they prepare to host Houston on Friday in the annual Space Game.
This latest loss underscores UCF’s ongoing struggles away from home, with a dismal 3-11 record since the beginning of the 2023 season. Coach Scott Frost expressed frustration, stating, “We’ve got to earn one on the road. It’s not going to be given to us, and we’ve got to play a lot better than that to do that.” UCF has averaged a mere 12 points per game on the road this season, a stark contrast to their potential.
In a shocking twist, UCF’s rushing game fell flat against Baylor’s previously vulnerable defense. The Bears, ranked near the bottom of the Big 12 in rushing defense, allowed UCF to muster only 74 rushing yards on 23 carries, the team’s worst performance since November 2022. Coach Frost noted, “Maybe the things that they’ve struggled with… that’s stuff we need to do on the post-mortem.” Despite junior Myles Montgomery leading the team with 50 rushing yards, the Knights could not find their rhythm.
Baylor’s quarterback Sawyer Robertson showcased his prowess, completing 73% of his passes for 267 yards and three touchdowns. UCF’s defense, particularly against passing plays, struggled significantly. Edge rusher Malachi Lawrence acknowledged, “They just have some really good catches,” emphasizing the challenges faced by the Knights’ defense.
Despite a disappointing outing from starting quarterback Tayven Jackson, who threw for 151 yards with two interceptions, Frost remains committed to his leadership. “I’m ready to ride with him,” Frost stated, reinforcing his confidence in Jackson’s potential to bounce back in the upcoming match against Houston.
In a rare bright spot for UCF, kicker Noe Ruelas scored the Knights’ only points with a 45-yard field goal just before halftime. However, his streak of 11 consecutive field goals ended with a missed 53-yard attempt in the third quarter, leaving fans disappointed.
As UCF gears up for a crucial showdown against Houston on Friday, the team must address its road performance and offensive struggles. Fans will be watching closely to see if the Knights can turn their fortunes around at home.
Stay tuned for updates as UCF prepares for this pivotal matchup. Will they break their road losing streak and reclaim their momentum? Time will tell.
