Doctor Who Revives Classic Companion Turlough After 41 Years
The beloved television series Doctor Who has reintroduced a classic character, Vislor Turlough, played by Mark Strickson, in a new short film accompanying the Doctor Who: The Collection Blu-ray release for season 21. This marks Turlough’s first onscreen appearance since 1984, when he was last seen in “The Caves of Androzani.” The short film features the Fifth Doctor, portrayed by Peter Davison, alongside companion Tegan, played by Janet Fielding, as they encounter the Daleks in London.
A Nostalgic Reunion
Since the series celebrated its 60th anniversary, numerous former cast members have returned, including Catherine Tate, Billie Piper, and Jodie Whittaker. The recent short films created for The Collection have showcased various beloved characters, adding depth to their stories. The latest installment reveals Turlough reaching out to the Doctor for help, as his planet, Trion, is under attack.
This message from Turlough suggests a continuing narrative that could unfold in future stories. While Turlough has been a regular voice in Big Finish’s audio dramas, this return to the screen has generated excitement among fans. The emotional reunion of the Fifth Doctor and Tegan with Turlough, despite not being physically together, resonates with long-time viewers.
The Future of Doctor Who’s Shorts
The short film, while more modest in production compared to the previous release “The Final Battle,” retains the charm that fans have come to expect. Producer Pete McTigh previously announced a pause in the production of short films for future The Collection releases. However, the revival of Davison, Fielding, and Strickson in this latest project indicates that this hiatus may be coming to an end.
With the main Doctor Who series not scheduled to return until December 2024, new short films could provide fans with the much-needed content during this interim period. The combination of nostalgia and new storytelling possibilities continues to engage a devoted audience, ensuring that Doctor Who remains a significant part of popular culture.
This revival of classic characters reminds viewers of the enduring legacy of Doctor Who and the rich universe it has created. The potential for further narratives involving Turlough and his struggles promises to keep fans eagerly anticipating what comes next in this iconic series.
