UPDATE: New York’s health officials are sounding the alarm as COVID-19 cases surge, with alarming vaccination trends sparking concern. Dr. Jim McDonald, commissioner of the New York State Department of Health, revealed that for every one patient hospitalized due to flu, there are three hospitalized due to COVID-19.

As of November 26, 2025, vaccination rates in some upstate New York counties show only 6% to 10% of residents are vaccinated against COVID-19, a staggering 30% decrease compared to last year. In contrast, flu vaccination rates hover between 20% and 30%. Dr. McDonald expressed deep concern about the preparedness of New Yorkers for the upcoming holiday season, stating, “When I look at our COVID numbers for vaccines, we’re about 30% less than last year. That concerns me.”

With the holiday season approaching, families are set to gather for celebrations, increasing the risk of illness transmission in crowded settings. Dr. McDonald warns, “If you get that COVID and flu vaccine, you’re going to be in better shape.”

In light of these developments, health professionals urge residents to prioritize vaccinations. Dr. Danielle Wales from Albany Med Health System emphasizes the importance of consulting with your doctor about any health-related products or supplements, stating, “Supplements some people find that they benefit them and that’s great, but you should remember if you get the flu and you get sick, you should make sure you’re reaching out to your doctor.”

The message is clear: with the combination of a declining vaccination rate and an increase in COVID-19 hospitalizations, New Yorkers must act swiftly to protect themselves and others. The time to get vaccinated is NOW.

Stay tuned for updates as health officials continue to monitor the situation closely.
