Shaker and Shenendehowa Dominate Section 2 Indoor Track Meet
The indoor track and field season kicked off with exciting performances at the Section 2 meet held at Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC) in Troy, New York, on February 3, 2024. The event featured strong showings from local high schools, particularly Shaker and Shenendehowa, who proved to be the standout teams in their respective categories.
Girls’ Competition Highlights
In the girls’ division, Shaker showcased their strength, securing a commanding total of 122 points to claim first place. Shenendehowa followed closely with 105 points, demonstrating their competitiveness throughout the meet. A significant factor in Shaker’s success was their depth in jumps and sprints, which allowed them to accumulate vital points.
Junior Ruby Miracle emerged as a key performer, winning the pole vault with a clearance of 10 feet 6 inches. Shaker’s Ella Majeran also made an impact, achieving podium finishes in both the long jump, where she placed third with a distance of 15 feet 4.25 inches, and the high jump, finishing third with a height of 4 feet 3 inches.
Schuylerville’s senior Meaghan Lynch made her mark by clinching victories in both the long jump and the triple jump, with impressive jumps of 16 feet 1.5 inches and 35 feet 9.25 inches, respectively. Shenendehowa’s team displayed a balanced effort, with senior Jordan Schidzick jumping to second place in the long jump at 15 feet 9.5 inches. Younger teammates, including Leah Menton and Olivia Johnson, contributed significantly to their team’s total points.
Boys’ Competition Highlights
The boys’ meet told a different yet equally compelling tale. Shenendehowa took the top spot with a total of 94 points, edging out Shaker, which finished with 79 points. Albany High School and Amsterdam tied for third place, each securing 47 points.
Distance events became a showcase of stamina and tactical racing. William Brooks from Ballston Spa completed the 1600-meter run in an impressive time of 4 minutes 52 seconds. LaSalle Institute’s Holden McLean set the pace in the 3200-meter run with a time of 11 minutes 30.6 seconds. For Shenendehowa, Leo Christopher ran a strong 1000-meter, clocking in at 2 minutes 56.4 seconds, while teammate Jonas Vinciquerra took victory in the 600-meter with a time of 1 minute 33.3 seconds.
Shaker excelled in the sprints and relays, with Gerardo Lopez winning the 300-meter dash in 38.5 seconds. The Shaker 4×200 relay team delivered a stellar performance, finishing first with a time of 1 minute 39.5 seconds, showcasing precise baton exchanges. Additionally, Walid Adjei continued Shaker’s success by winning the 55-meter hurdles in 8.2 seconds, and Leon Nickson tied for second in the high jump at 5 feet.
Field events featured standout contributions as well. Amsterdam’s Bryce Greco showcased his talent in the horizontal jumps, claiming victory in the triple jump with a leap of 44 feet 0.75 inches while finishing second in the long jump at 19 feet 10.75 inches. Albany High’s Nasief Smith clinched the long jump title with a jump of 20 feet 4.75 inches, and Damian Roennpagel from Cobleskill-Richmondville electrified the crowd by clearing 11 feet in the pole vault, marking the highest achievement in the boys’ meet.
As the competition concluded, the team standings reflected the depth and versatility of the leading squads.

The Section 2 indoor track meet highlighted the incredible talent and determination of these young athletes, setting a promising tone for the remainder of the season.
