The city of Greeley has initiated the search for a new public works director following the departure of Paul Trombino on December 1, 2023. Trombino, who served the city for four years, previously held the position of director and Homeland Security advisor for the state of Iowa before joining Greeley in 2021. His leadership was integral to various city projects aiming to enhance infrastructure and public services.

During Trombino’s tenure, he contributed significantly to several major initiatives, including the Greeley-Weld County Airport improvement project and the Mobility Expansion for Regional Growth and Equity (MERGE) program. He also played a role in the Catalyst project, which is set for a citywide vote regarding a zoning ordinance passed earlier this year. Acting City Manager Brian McBroom praised Trombino, stating, “We are grateful for his technical expertise and leadership of daily operations and the many infrastructure projects he championed.”

In addition to these projects, Trombino initiated plans for new stormwater improvements, which represent a substantial investment of $500 million aimed at addressing aging infrastructure and enhancing the city’s capacity to manage storm events. His leadership also facilitated the recruitment of Alquist 3D, a firm specializing in 3D printing for buildings. Alquist 3D is collaborating with the Greeley-Weld Habitat for Humanity on the Hope Springs project.

At the time of his departure, Trombino’s annual salary was reported to be $228,800, according to Greeley Public Information Officer Kim Kappel. The city has not disclosed the specific reasons for his exit, citing it as a personnel matter.

As Greeley moves forward, the posted job description for the new public works director indicates that the role will entail managing ongoing large-scale projects, securing funding, and ensuring effective communication across various city departments. The anticipated salary range for this position is between $161,900 and $198,350, with a maximum potential salary of $234,800, dependent on the candidate’s experience.

The median income for Greeley residents is approximately $76,462, based on 2024 census data. The city aims to fill the director position promptly, with no plans to appoint an interim director during the transition. Notably, Will Jones, the city’s deputy public works director, is scheduled to become the next public works director for Loveland, effective January 12, 2024.

In addition to the search for a public works director, Greeley is also seeking a new city manager following the resignation of Raymond Lee. Lee has been appointed as the next city administrator for Portland, Oregon. The dual searches reflect a significant period of transition for Greeley as it continues to advance its infrastructure and public services.
