Urgent Update: Shooting at Brown University Claims 2 Lives, 8 Hurt
UPDATE: A tragic shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, has left at least two people dead and eight others critically injured. This shocking incident unfolded earlier today, prompting immediate alerts for students to shelter in place as police responded to an active shooter situation.
Authorities confirmed the shooting occurred at the Barus and Holley building, which houses engineering and physics classrooms. The university had multiple final exams scheduled during the time of the shooting, with the incident beginning around 2 p.m. ET and continuing into the evening.
President Donald Trump addressed the nation, expressing deep concern for the victims. “All we can do right now is pray for the victims and for those that were very badly hurt,” he said while returning from the Army-Navy football game. His administration is closely monitoring the situation, with federal law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, providing assistance to local authorities.
The suspect, described as a male dressed in black, remains at large. Providence Deputy Chief of Police Tim O’Hara stated, “We’re utilizing every resource possible to find this suspect. Please do not come to the area.” Currently, there has been no interaction between the suspect and police, who reported that he fled the scene on foot.
In a startling turn, earlier reports that a suspect was in custody have been retracted. Officials are actively investigating the situation and working to determine how the shooter gained access to the building. Witnesses described a chaotic scene, with emergency responders rushing to provide aid to the victims, some of whom were seen receiving CPR on the ground.
Brown University Provost Francis Doyle urged students and staff to continue sheltering in place as the situation unfolds. The university is coordinating with law enforcement to assess who was inside the building during the attack and to provide support services to students.
As the community grapples with this tragedy, students have shared their experiences of lockdown. One doctoral student, Chiangheng Chien, recalled hiding in a lab with fellow students while they awaited police instructions. “It’s very scary because I don’t want to get harmed and I don’t want my people in my state to get harmed,” he said.
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley has confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and that officials are working closely with federal agencies. “Brown, Providence, and the FBI are currently in close coordination as they seek to find the shooter or shooters,” he stated during a news conference.
This incident marks a significant moment in Brown University’s history, which is known for its rigorous academic programs and vibrant community. As this story develops, more updates will follow. The university community is urged to stay vigilant and follow official guidance.
Authorities continue to request the public to avoid the area and remain alert for further updates. This is a developing story, and we will provide more details as they become available. Please stay tuned for live updates.
