Bondi Beach Shooting: Naveed Akram Charged with 59 Crimes
A tragic shooting at a Hanukkah celebration in Bondi Beach, Sydney, claimed 15 lives and left a nation in shock. The alleged perpetrators, a father-son duo, have been charged with a total of 59 offenses, including 15 counts of murder and terrorism, according to New South Wales Police. The incident, which occurred on December 17, 2023, has heightened concerns regarding antisemitism and violent extremism across Australia.
Naveed Akram, aged 24, emerged from a coma on December 19 and remains under police guard in a Sydney hospital. His father, Sajid Akram, 50, was shot dead by police at the scene. The police statement indicated that the assault was intended to advance a religious cause and instill fear within the community. They believe the attack was inspired by ISIS, classified as a terrorist organization in Australia.
A court filing on December 20 identified Naveed Akram as the individual charged with these serious offenses. He is scheduled to appear via video link at a local court on December 25. The police investigation revealed that both father and son had traveled to the southern Philippines, an area known for Islamist militancy, just weeks before the shooting.
Calls for Gun Law Reforms
In response to the attack, Chris Minns, the Premier of New South Wales, announced plans to recall parliament on December 22 to introduce significant reforms to gun laws. These changes aim to limit the number of firearms an individual can possess and regulate access to certain types of shotguns. The government is also considering reforms that would restrict large street protests following such terror incidents to prevent further unrest within the community.
Minns emphasized the importance of unity in the aftermath of the tragedy, stating, “We’ve got a monumental task in front of us. It’s huge. I think we need a summer of calm and togetherness, not division.”
Funerals and Community Response
Funerals for the victims began on December 20, with the service for Rabbi Eli Schlanger, an assistant rabbi at Chabad Bondi Synagogue, among those held. Rabbi Schlanger, a father of five, was known for his extensive work within the Jewish community, providing support and connection through various outreach efforts.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has faced criticism regarding the government’s efforts to combat rising antisemitism. He affirmed the government’s commitment to working with the Jewish community to eradicate antisemitism from society. Furthermore, the government is under scrutiny for allowing Sajid Akram to obtain the high-powered firearms used in the attack.
Naveed Akram had previously been investigated by Australia’s domestic intelligence agency in 2019 over alleged links to ISIS, but authorities found no evidence to suggest he posed a threat at that time.
Amidst the tragedy, stories of heroism have emerged. Ahmed al-Ahmed, a man who confronted one of the shooters and sustained gunshot wounds in the process, is set to undergo surgery. His family in Syria expressed pride in his bravery, with his uncle stating, “Ahmed is a hero, we’re proud of him.”
The family of Jack Hibbert, a police officer injured in the attack, reported that he has lost vision in one eye and faces a long recovery. His family praised his courage and selflessness during the incident, highlighting his dedication to protecting others.
Among the victims were a Holocaust survivor and a ten-year-old girl named Matilda, whose father urged the community to remember her name and legacy. As the community continues to grieve, local swimmers at Bondi Beach held a minute’s silence, and organizers canceled a planned New Year’s Eve party in light of the tragedy.
The impact of the Bondi Beach shooting is profound, as Australia grapples with questions surrounding safety and the rise of extremist violence.
