The University of Southern California (USC) has canceled its men’s basketball game against Brown University, originally scheduled for March 10, 2024, at the Galen Center. The cancellation follows a tragic shooting at Brown’s campus that resulted in the deaths of two students and injuries to nine others.

In a statement released on Tuesday, USC’s head coach Eric Musselman expressed deep condolences to the victims’ families and the Brown University community. “We are heartbroken by the tragedy on Brown University’s campus and extend our sincere condolences to the families and the entire Brown University community,” Musselman stated. He emphasized that his team is thinking of those affected and wishes them strength during this difficult time.

Brown’s leading scorer, Landon Lewis, a senior forward standing at 6 feet 8 inches tall, is averaging 12.6 points per game this season. The cancellation of the game marks a somber moment for both teams, as they were set to compete shortly after the shocking event.

In light of the cancellation, USC announced it would instead face Division III UC Santa Cruz at 1 p.m. on the same day. “We want to thank UC Santa Cruz for coming in to play us on short notice,” Musselman remarked. All tickets purchased for the original game against Brown will be honored at the new matchup, and additional information will be communicated to ticket holders.

In parallel, Brown University also canceled its women’s basketball game against Monmouth University, which was set to take place on the same day. Both games were to be the first sporting events for either school following the tragic shooting.

The decision to cancel these games reflects a growing awareness of the impact that violence can have on communities and the importance of prioritizing the well-being of students and fans alike during such trying times.
