US Intensifies Operations Against Islamic State Following Soldier Deaths

On December 17, US Central Command (CENTCOM) reported that American and allied forces have conducted nearly 80 operations against the Islamic State (IS) in Syria since July. This announcement follows the tragic killing of two US soldiers and an interpreter by a member of the Syrian security forces on December 13. The attack, which both Syrian and US authorities attribute to IS, underscores the ongoing threat posed by the group in the region.

In the wake of the attack, CENTCOM highlighted recent military actions targeting IS and other militant groups in both Syria and Iraq. The military has detained 119 terrorists and eliminated 14 over the past six months, contributing to efforts to neutralize threats to US interests abroad.

Collaborative Efforts Against IS

The United States has partnered with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in eastern Syria for over a decade to combat IS. “We are steadfast in our relentless pursuit of terrorists who seek to harm Americans and our interests abroad,” stated Admiral Brad Cooper, head of CENTCOM. The recent operations included collaboration with the Syrian Ministry of Interior, resulting in the raid of 15 Islamic State sites.

According to CENTCOM, these joint efforts led to the destruction of over 130 mortars and rockets, multiple rifles, machine guns, anti-tank mines, and materials for building improvised explosive devices. “We will continue to work closely with our Syrian partners to hunt down ISIS networks and prevent their resurgence,” Cooper added.

On the same day as CENTCOM’s announcement, the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported the arrest of a person linked to IS during a security operation in the Dummar neighborhood of Damascus. Syrian Brigadier General Osama Mohammad Khair Atkeh described the operation as precise, based on reliable intelligence, leading to the discovery of explosive devices, weapons, and drones.

Regional Security Operations Intensify

The Islamic State remains a significant threat in Syria and Iraq despite being considerably weakened. Iraq’s Counter-Terrorism Service (CTS) announced the arrest of six suspected ISIS members and the destruction of several militant hideouts during coordinated security operations across the country on December 17. The CTS collaborated with the Kurdistan Region’s Asayish Directorate of Operations and Commando Forces in these efforts.

Furthermore, Iraqi security forces conducted a rare airborne raid into Syria, working alongside Syrian security forces and the US-led coalition against IS. This operation targeted a village in northeastern Hasaka province, near the Iraqi border. Iraqi authorities have not disclosed details about the detainees or the charges against them.

On December 18, a US raid near Raqqa targeted an Islamic State operative. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that heavy gunfire erupted during the operation, which was the second such incident within a 24-hour period. The increased tempo of operations is linked to the Iraqi cross-border raid, highlighting a coordinated approach to combating IS in the region.

As military operations continue, the situation remains fluid, with both US and regional forces actively engaged in efforts to dismantle IS networks and prevent any potential resurgence of the group in Syria and Iraq.
