Bulldogs Surge to Eighth Straight Win, Defeat UMary 80-65

BREAKING: The Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs secured their eighth consecutive victory with a commanding 80-65 win against UMary on Saturday at Romano Gym. This win boosts UMD’s record to 9-2 overall and a perfect 7-0 in conference play, solidifying their dominance on the court.

The Bulldogs stormed out of the gate, showcasing an impressive first-half shooting performance that set the tone for the game. UMD quickly jumped to a 13-2 lead, thanks to a series of inside baskets from Lexi Karge and Grace Counts, along with a 3-point play by Myra Moorjani. The team maintained momentum with a staggering 11-of-13 shooting start, finishing the first quarter with a commanding 29-13 lead.

In the second quarter, Minnesota Duluth continued to dominate, with Karge and Counts combining for a remarkable 27 points by halftime, leading to a lopsided score of 52-28. Karge’s efficiency was on full display as she shot an incredible 7-of-8 (87.5%) from the field, while Counts followed closely with 6-of-7 (85.7%) shooting. The Bulldogs’ team effort saw them finish the half at a red-hot 24-of-36 (66.7%) from the field, while UMary struggled, shooting only 8-of-30 (26.7%).

The Marauders made a significant push in the third quarter, draining 6-of-7 attempts from beyond the arc led by NSIC’s top scorer Bergen Kinnebrew, who racked up 13 points in the period, narrowing the gap to just 10 points at 64-54. However, the Bulldogs quickly regained control, stretching their lead back to 14 points at the start of the fourth quarter and maintaining a double-digit advantage throughout the final frame.

Karge finished the game with a team-high 17 points, supported by Myra Moorjani, Claire Bjorge, Grace Counts, and Ashley Fritz, all contributing in double figures with 13 points each from Moorjani and Bjorge, and 12 points each from Counts and Fritz. The Bulldogs also showcased their defensive prowess, securing 14 steals, with Moorjani leading the charge with five steals and Bjorge adding four.

Looking ahead, the Bulldogs are set to hit the road for their next matchup against Bemidji State on January 3, 2023. With their current momentum, all eyes will be on UMD as they strive to extend their winning streak further.
