Oscar Smith’s Johnson Named Offensive Player of the Year
UPDATE: In a stunning announcement, Oscar Smith senior wide receiver Travis Johnson has been named the VHSL state Class 6 Offensive Player of the Year. This accolade comes just days after the Tigers celebrated their second consecutive state title, solidifying their status in high school football.
Johnson, who has committed to Michigan, delivered an extraordinary season, catching 56 passes for 1,157 yards and scoring 15 touchdowns. His performance marks his second consecutive all-state recognition, showcasing his dominance on the field.
Joining Johnson on the first team are seven other talented Tigers, including junior quarterback Lonnie Andrews and senior offensive lineman Dory Wilson. The standout defensive players include sophomore defensive lineman Lincoln Halliday, senior linebacker Malachi White, and senior defensive back Jayden Covil. Notably, senior all-purpose player Na’Rod Jarvis and senior punt returner Quali Price also earned first-team honors.
Oscar Smith’s head coach, Chris Scott, has been recognized as the Coach of the Year after leading the team to its fourth title during his tenure. The Tigers defeated Indian River 33-20 on September 20, 2025, at Oscar Smith High School in Chesapeake, Virginia.
Meanwhile, in college football, Old Dominion is experiencing a shake-up as starting tight end Jailen Butler has announced his intention to enter the transfer portal. The 6-foot-4, 245-pounder has accumulated 21 starts and 18 career catches for 103 yards and one touchdown. He joins quarterback Colton Joseph and running back Trequan Jones in seeking new opportunities.
On a positive note, the Monarchs have gained a commitment from running back Hunter Patterson, who is transferring from Division II West Liberty. Patterson had an impressive season, rushing for 1,219 yards and 17 touchdowns while also catching 33 passes for 418 yards and three touchdowns, despite his team’s 3-8 record.
In women’s soccer, two players from Christopher Newport have been named Scholar All-Region. Senior midfielder Hanna Heaton and junior goalkeeper Amy Sidaway were recognized for their academic and athletic excellence. This recognition marks a program record of eight consecutive years with at least one player honored for both on-field and classroom achievements.
