Beloved Community Leader Carolyn Hacker Passes Away at 87

Carolyn Mailliard Hacker, a cherished resident of San Rafael, California, passed away on November 21, 2025, at the age of 87 due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease. Her death marks the end of a life dedicated to family, community service, and the pursuit of knowledge.

Born in San Francisco in 1938, Carolyn was the eldest daughter of J.W. Mailliard and Margaret Field and the granddaughter of prominent figures Ward and Kate Mailliard. Her family had longstanding connections across the Bay Area, with roots in San Geronimo, Cotati, and Yorkville. These ties deeply influenced her life and values.

During her early years, Carolyn traveled extensively with her family due to her father’s military service in the United States Army. After the conclusion of World War II, the family settled back in San Francisco. Carolyn’s education spanned several esteemed institutions, including KD Burke School, Katherine Branson Girls School, and Connecticut College for Women.

Commitment to Community and Family

In 1963, Carolyn established her home in San Rafael, where she would spend more than six decades. She developed a passion for gardening, earning recognition for her floral displays at the Marin County Fair. Her dedication to her garden reflected her nurturing spirit.

Beyond her hobbies, Carolyn was a devoted genealogist. She invested significant time and effort into preserving her family’s history, ensuring that future generations would have access to their roots. Her commitment to community service was evident through her active involvement in local education. From 1972 to 1980, she contributed to the Miller Creek Elementary School District and the San Rafael City Schools District, demonstrating her belief in the importance of education and community support.

Carolyn is survived by her husband, Paul Hacker; her children, Barbara (Greg) and Lyn (Don); and her grandchildren, including Andrew (Katy), Chris, Emily (Mike), Amanda, and Kevin. She also leaves behind her great-granddaughter, Jocelyn, as well as her sisters, Kathy and Margot, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Celebrating a Life Well-Lived

In honor of Carolyn’s legacy, a Celebration of Life will be held in May 2026, aligning with her birthday and Mother’s Day. The family invites those who wish to pay tribute to contribute in her memory to the San Rafael Public Library Foundation or the Marin Humane Society.
