As winter approaches, families are increasingly concerned about staying healthy during the cold and flu season. Dr. Theresa Nguyen, chair of pediatrics at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center and an assistant professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, offers essential advice to support immune systems and promote overall well-being during this time.

Key Strategies for Immune Support

Dr. Nguyen emphasizes the importance of focusing on what she calls the “three pillars of health”: nutrition, movement, and sleep. She suggests that families prioritize a diet rich in whole foods that include lean protein, plant-based fiber, and healthy oils. Staying hydrated is also crucial.

“Making sure we eat nutritious whole foods, as well as drinking enough water, are key,” Dr. Nguyen states. She highlights the significance of sleep for physical and emotional health, noting that it is essential for immune function. Regular physical activity is equally important, and families should find enjoyable ways to incorporate movement into their daily routines.

In addition, Dr. Nguyen advises practicing good hygiene, particularly during colder months when many people are indoors. She stresses the importance of washing hands regularly, staying home when feeling unwell, and getting vaccinated against the flu, COVID-19, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) for those in the appropriate age groups.

The Role of Diet in Immune Health

Nutrition plays a critical role in maintaining a robust immune system. A balanced diet can reduce the reliance on medications and help prevent illnesses. Dr. Nguyen recommends focusing on foods that are high in polyphenols, such as nuts, berries, and beets, which provide antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits.

She also advises incorporating prebiotic foods like beans and leafy greens, along with probiotic sources such as yogurt and kimchi, into meals. To avoid overeating, she suggests eating until approximately 80% full and minimizing processed foods, sugars, and artificial sweeteners.

“Long story short, if we eat balanced meals most of the time, it will support your immune system all the time, not just during cold and flu season,” Dr. Nguyen explains.

The Importance of Sleep

Sleep is vital for overall health and significantly impacts immune function. According to Dr. Nguyen, adequate sleep increases the production of white blood cells that fight infections and enhances the body’s ability to produce antibodies.

Establishing good sleep habits is essential for individuals of all ages. Dr. Nguyen recommends a routine she calls the “Four Bs”: bath, brush teeth, read a book, and bed. Creating a conducive sleep environment is also crucial; bedrooms should be dark and cool, and electronic devices should be turned off at least an hour before bedtime. Limiting caffeine intake, particularly in the afternoon and evening, and engaging in daily physical activity can further enhance sleep quality.

Finding Safe Exercise Options in Winter

Maintaining an active lifestyle during the colder months is important for both physical and mental health. Dr. Nguyen encourages families to incorporate movement into their daily routines, such as walking the dog or organizing dance parties at home.

“Movement doesn’t just have physical benefits; it improves brain activity, enhances mood, and helps with feelings of restlessness or anxiety,” she points out. Regular physical activity can boost creativity and cognitive function, making it an essential component of health during winter.

Dr. Nguyen’s commitment to integrative wellness reflects her dedication to her patients and their families. By focusing on nutrition, movement, and sleep, families can proactively support their health during the cold and flu season, ensuring a healthier winter for everyone.
