UPDATE: A winter weather advisory is now in effect for several counties in New York, with significant snowfall expected. The National Weather Service issued the advisory early Friday morning, confirming that conditions will be hazardous from 4 p.m. today until 1 p.m. Saturday.

Counties affected include Herkimer, Fulton, Montgomery, Schenectady, Saratoga, Albany, Rensselaer, and Columbia. Residents should brace for total snow accumulations between 3 and 7 inches as snow begins to develop from west to east around or shortly after sunset tonight.

This winter storm poses an urgent threat to travel. The weather service warns that slippery road conditions could severely impact the evening commute. “Slow down and use caution while traveling,” officials advise, emphasizing the potential for accidents on icy roads.

Winter’s icy grip can have deadly consequences, with over 6,000 weather-related vehicle fatalities and more than 480,000 injuries reported each year. Staying safe on the roads is paramount. As temperatures hover near freezing, drivers are urged to assume icy patches may be present and adjust driving habits accordingly.

Prepare for the worst by following key safety tips. If traveling is necessary, inform family or friends of your destination and route. Ensure your vehicle is equipped with winter essentials, such as a full gas tank, windshield scraper, jumper cables, and emergency supplies like a blanket and high-calorie food.

If you find yourself stranded, remain calm and avoid walking for help. Instead, signal for assistance by attaching a cloth to your car’s antenna or mirror, and keep your vehicle visible with lights activated.

Be vigilant for snow plows and allow them ample room. Only pass when it is safe to do so. Before leaving, check current road conditions to make informed decisions about your travel plans.

As this winter storm develops, stay tuned for updates and take precautions to ensure your safety on the roads. The National Weather Service will continue to monitor the situation and provide essential information as conditions evolve. Share this alert with others to keep everyone informed and safe during this winter weather event.
