Jason Momoa’s ‘The Red Road’ Returns to Netflix After Six-Year Absence
In a surprise return, the gritty drama series The Red Road has made its way back to Netflix on December 26, 2023, after a six-year hiatus. The show, which originally aired from 2014 to 2015, features Jason Momoa in a captivating role and is now available for streaming in the US and several international regions. All twelve episodes of both seasons are currently accessible, marking a notable revival for fans of the series.
The return of The Red Road is part of a renewed agreement between Netflix and AMC, struck over the summer. This deal enables the streaming platform to present a selection of the network’s popular titles, both classic and contemporary. The series previously resided on Netflix until its removal in November 2019, following the expiration of its licensing window.
While the entire series is now live globally, it is noteworthy that the return is temporary. Unlike other AMC shows that are typically licensed for about a year, The Red Road is set to remain on the platform for only six months. This means that unless a streaming extension is granted, the series could be removed as early as June 26, 2024. Additionally, viewers using Netflix’s ad-supported tier will not have access to this title, as it is among the many AMC shows currently restricted from playing on that subscription level.
Plot and Setting of ‘The Red Road’
Set in the small town of Walpole, New Jersey, The Red Road delves into the complex relationship between the local community and the neighboring Ramapough Lenape Nation. The narrative is ignited by a tragedy that leads to a cover-up, forcing two men from opposing sides of the law into an uneasy alliance. The official synopsis describes the series as “a hard-hitting drama that revolves around a sheriff struggling to keep his family together while simultaneously policing two clashing communities.”
The sheriff’s life becomes further complicated following a terrible tragedy involving his wife, which catalyzes the dangerous partnership he forms with a member of the Ramapough Lenape tribe. This alliance fundamentally alters the dynamics in both communities and leaves lasting scars on all involved.
Cast and Performances
The series boasts a talented cast, with each actor delivering compelling performances. Martin Henderson, known for his role in Virgin River, portrays Harold Jensen, the conflicted sheriff at the center of the story. Jason Momoa, who gained fame through his role in Game of Thrones, plays Phillip Kopus, a charismatic and menacing member of the Lenape tribe.
Other notable cast members include Julianne Nicholson, recognized for her performance in Mare of Easttown, as Jean Jensen, Harold’s wife who faces her own challenges, and Tom Sizemore, who plays Jack Kopus, Phillip’s father. Their performances significantly enhance the show’s intense atmosphere, drawing viewers into its dramatic narrative.
The return of The Red Road to Netflix offers both new viewers and long-time fans a chance to experience this compelling story once again. As audiences dive back into the struggles and tensions that define the lives of the characters, the series promises a gripping viewing experience. Will you be revisiting The Red Road now that it is back on Netflix?
