Moths Caught Drinking Moose Tears in Vermont—New Behavior Unveiled
BREAKING: In a fascinating new discovery, researchers have captured footage of moths drinking tears from a bull moose in Vermont, marking an unprecedented behavior in cold-weather regions. This extraordinary event was documented on June 19, 2024, when a trail camera recorded 80 images of moths clustered around the moose’s face between 1:44 and 1:48 a.m.
This unique behavior, known as lachryphagy, is not commonly observed in moths outside tropical zones, with the only prior example being interactions between a moth and a horse. The researchers, who published their findings in Ecosphere and detailed them in Scientific American, describe this as a groundbreaking observation, highlighting that neither the moose nor moths in colder climates had previously been recorded engaging in tear-drinking.
The captured footage is part of an extensive collection of over 247,000 moose photos gathered across nearly 500 sites in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont. The moths observed are believed to belong to the Geometridae family, as indicated by their size and shape, although definitive identification remains pending.
While lachryphagy is a peculiar behavior that helps these insects supplement their diet with essential sodium and minerals, it carries potential risks. Researchers warn that tick-feeding insects could theoretically spread diseases such as keratoconjunctivitis to moose, which could be detrimental to their health. However, it is important to note that moths have not been documented as disease carriers through this unusual feeding method.
The implications of this behavior are significant, as it provides new insights into the adaptability of moths and their interaction with larger mammals.
