Russian Drone Attacks Rescue Robot, Saves Injured Ukrainian Soldier
BREAKING: A Russian drone has attacked a rescue robot in Ukraine, jeopardizing a critical evacuation mission but ultimately protecting an injured soldier from further harm. Footage released by Ukraine’s 1st Separate Medical Battalion reveals the dramatic moment when the ground robot was struck during its operation to transport a casualty.
The incident, which occurred on July 15, 2023, highlights the increasing use of ground robots in Ukraine’s military operations. These machines are designed to transport wounded soldiers while shielding them from enemy attacks. Despite sustaining damage, the robot successfully safeguarded the soldier, who had been injured by a previous drone drop and was unable to walk.
The battalion reported that the robot’s mission lasted 3 hours and 25 minutes and involved navigating through heavily contested territory, with a planned return journey of 36 miles. The team opted to deploy the robot, controlled remotely by soldiers, to minimize human exposure to danger in areas with a significant Russian presence.
Shortly after loading the injured soldier onto the robot, it detected a Russian drone. The decision was made to proceed at maximum speed; however, the drone struck the robot on its second attack attempt, just 2.5 miles into the journey. Fortunately, the soldier remained unharmed due to the robot’s armored capsule, while the robot itself suffered damage.
The soldier was subsequently evacuated by another unit and received the necessary medical treatment. The battalion confirmed that the robot was also recovered after the incident. Footage shared on social media shows the robot moving through rural areas at night, demonstrating the high stakes involved in these rescue missions.
The rapid development of Ukraine’s robotic capabilities is notable, with various companies contributing to the fleet. As these innovations evolve, the use of robots in combat zones presents both opportunities and risks. Oleksandr Yabchanka, head of robotic systems for Ukraine’s Da Vinci Wolves Battalion, previously expressed concerns that deploying robots can sometimes increase risks for soldiers, as it may expose them to enemy fire when they could otherwise be hidden or with comrades.
While robots currently conduct less than 1% of Ukraine’s drone missions, their application is on the rise, particularly for evacuating wounded personnel. The West is closely monitoring these developments, learning from Ukraine’s experiences to enhance their own military technologies.
