Major Retail Exits Signal Challenges for Towson Town Center
At least three well-known fashion retailers are exiting Towson Town Center, a significant development for the shopping venue. Tommy Bahama has already vacated its space, while both Banana Republic and Madewell are set to close in the coming weeks. This trend reflects ongoing challenges for the shopping center, which has faced issues related to safety and management in recent years.
The closures come at a time when Towson Town Center has struggled to maintain a stable retail environment. Incidents of youth violence have raised concerns among local officials. Notably, in November 2023, a robbery and stabbing incident resulted in the arrest of four teenagers, prompting a county councilmember to urge mall management to take stronger measures to ensure a safe shopping experience.
The reasons behind the recent departures are not immediately clear. Representatives for Banana Republic, Madewell, and Tommy Bahama did not respond to requests for comment on Tuesday. Similarly, officials from Brookfield Properties, the operator of the mall, have not provided any information regarding the closures.
A visit to the mall on Tuesday confirmed the status of the closures. Tommy Bahama, known for its beach-themed lifestyle products, has already removed its signage, although the mall’s website still lists the store, along with various maps indicating its former location.
Meanwhile, Banana Republic, owned by The Gap, has posted notices indicating a closure date of January 22, 2024. An employee, who preferred to remain anonymous, confirmed the impending closure and noted that inventory appeared to be dwindling. Signs at the store redirected customers to the retailer’s website for further information.
In a similar vein, Madewell, a brand under the J. Crew umbrella, is also planning to close its location. Although specific details about the closure remain ambiguous, an employee verified that the store would shut its doors soon. No official closure signs were posted at Madewell, but like Banana Republic, its stock was visibly low.
Historically, Towson Town Center has seen numerous retailers come and go. In the 2010s, the mall attracted high-end brands like Burberry, Louis Vuitton, and Tiffany, all of which have since left the shopping center. The recent exits of Tommy Bahama, Banana Republic, and Madewell mark another chapter in the ongoing evolution of retail in Towson.
