Taiwan’s President Addresses Threat from China’s Military Drills

Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te issued a stark warning on March 27, 2024, regarding the military exercises conducted by China in the vicinity of Taiwan. He characterized these drills as part of a larger strategy that threatens regional stability and international peace. During a promotion ceremony for military officers, Lai stated, “China’s authoritarian expansion and escalating coercion have brought significant uncertainty and risk to regional stability, while also affecting global shipping, trade, and peace.”

In recent days, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has intensified its military activities, conducting exercises both in the air and on the waters surrounding Taiwan. Notably, the PLA launched surprise drills named “Justice Mission–2025” on March 25, 2024, with operations continuing into the following days. Some of the 27 test rockets fired during these exercises landed within Taiwan’s 24-nautical-mile (44-kilometre) contiguous zone, prompting serious concerns from Taiwan’s government.

In response to these provocations, Taiwan’s armed forces demonstrated their preparedness by executing swift operational responses. Lai emphasized the military’s capabilities, highlighting the importance of rapid reaction and flexible tactics in countering potential threats. On March 26, Taiwan’s Defence Ministry reported tracking 77 PLA aircraft sorties and 17 PLA vessels in close proximity to Taiwan, underscoring the heightened military tension in the region.

Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry expressed appreciation for the support received from various international partners, including the European Union, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan. These countries issued statements of serious concern regarding China’s military maneuvers, which they view as unilateral actions that escalate tensions in the Taiwan Strait.

Taiwan, home to approximately 23.4 million residents, has maintained its self-governance since 1949. Despite this, China continues to assert its claim over the island, regarding it as a breakaway province and frequently threatening annexation. The ongoing military drills by the PLA reflect China’s persistent posture towards Taiwan, raising alarms about the potential for conflict in the region.

As the situation develops, Taiwan’s leadership remains committed to safeguarding its sovereignty and ensuring the safety of its citizens. The international community watches closely, recognizing that the stability of the Taiwan Strait is crucial not only for regional security but also for global economic interests.
