UPDATE: As New Year’s Eve festivities kick off across Phoenix, revelers are urged to prioritize safety with numerous transportation options available to ensure a safe journey home. With discounted rides from rideshare apps and free public transportation, there’s no excuse to drive under the influence tonight.

Starting at 7 p.m. on December 31, 2025, all light rail and bus services offered by Valley Metro will be free, continuing into the early hours of January 1, 2026. This initiative, in partnership with Coors Light, aims to reduce the number of impaired drivers on the road during this celebratory night.

Rideshare services such as Uber and Lyft are also stepping up, providing discounted rides to encourage responsible travel. With personalized codes for verification and real-time ride tracking, these services are designed to enhance safety for users.

Authorities are reminding users to remain vigilant. “Verify the driver’s information. Verify the car information. For example, make, model, license plate before they’re going inside the car, if possible, to sit in the backseat,” stated Lindsey Fernandez, public information officer for the Tempe Police Department. This advice underlines the importance of awareness, especially during a busy night filled with celebrations.

Local resident Jessica Kuna emphasizes the significance of planning ahead. “I usually always ride with a friend. So I feel like I’m, like, decently safe,” she shared. “My husband doesn’t really drink, so he usually drives me and my friends. If he can’t make it, we do Waymo or something like that. It just doesn’t seem worth it to even take one drink and try to drive.”

With so many options available, the Phoenix area is poised to ensure that everyone can enjoy the celebrations responsibly. Don’t miss out on these critical services as you ring in the New Year!

Stay tuned for further updates as the night progresses, and remember to plan your safe ride home!
