UPDATE: A new government survey reveals that artificial intelligence, K-culture, and the concept of “authentic self” dominated online interests in South Korea throughout 2023. Released on December 31, 2023, the findings from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism show a staggering 44% rise in online mentions of AI compared to last year.

This surge reflects not just fascination with the technology, but also rising concerns over job security, safety, and fairness in its application. The ministry reported that related keywords included security, policy, spread, and regulation, indicating a complex relationship between public interest and apprehension.

Meanwhile, interest in K-culture has risen by 31%, fueled by global hits like the animated series K-Pop Demon Hunters. Terms frequently associated with this trend include hanbok, K-pop, Korean cuisine, and idols, showcasing the cultural phenomenon’s widespread appeal.

Additionally, the survey noted a 10% increase in discussions around the “authentic self,” a concept that encourages individuals to carve out personal life paths. The Ministry conducted this comprehensive analysis based on a staggering 538 million online data pieces collected from various platforms, including news outlets, social media, and video channels, from January through November 2023.
