SMU Triumphs Over Arizona 24-19 in Thrilling Holiday Bowl
UPDATE: SMU has secured a thrilling 24-19 victory over No. 21 Arizona in the Holiday Bowl held at Snapdragon Stadium on December 29, 2023. This victory marks a significant moment for the Mustangs, who have ended a five-game postseason losing streak.
In a powerful performance, quarterback Kevin Jennings threw for 278 yards, completing 21 of 32 passes. His standout moment came on the second play from scrimmage with an impressive 80-yard touchdown pass that set the tone for the game. Jennings also contributed to touchdown runs by T.J. Harden and Stone Eby, leading SMU to a commanding 24-0 lead at halftime.
The Mustangs (9-4) displayed resilience against Arizona (also 9-4), overcoming three interceptions by Jennings in the second half. Despite a valiant effort from Arizona’s quarterback Noah Fifita, who threw three touchdowns, SMU maintained control in the closing moments. Fifita completed 28 of 43 passes for 265 yards.
The game’s start was electric, with the Mustangs executing a trick play that involved a handoff to Harden, who pitched to wide receiver Yamir Knight, before Jennings connected with tight end Matthew Hibner at the one-yard line. Harden then scored on the next play, propelling SMU into an early lead.
As the game progressed, Arizona fought back with a touchdown pass to Cameron Barmore with just 33 seconds remaining, but SMU recovered the onside kick, sealing their victory and ensuring they did not repeat past mistakes from previous Holiday Bowl appearances.
SMU’s victory is particularly poignant, as it marks their first postseason win since 2012, when they triumphed over Fresno State in the Hawaii Bowl. This game not only eases the pain of earlier defeats but also signifies a renewed hope for the Mustangs’ football program.
Next, fans will be eager to see how both teams build on their seasons. The Mustangs’ victory positions them for potential growth, while Arizona will reflect on missed opportunities as they seek to improve their postseason performance.
This game has captured the hearts of college football fans, and the emotional stakes were high as both teams aimed for a strong finish to the season. The loyalty of both Jennings and Fifita, two redshirt juniors who opted to stay at their respective institutions, adds a layer of depth to the narrative, reflecting a commitment to their teams amidst the challenges of the modern college football landscape.
As the excitement from this game settles, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely for the implications of this match-up on future seasons. Will SMU continue to rise, or will Arizona regroup for a comeback? Only time will tell.
