Beloved Teacher James “Jim” Danielson Passes Away at 77

James “Jim” Gregory Danielson, a cherished educator and devoted family man, passed away peacefully at home in Vacaville on December 1, 2025. He was surrounded by his wife, Dianne, and daughter, Kailyn, after a prolonged battle with cancer. He was 77 years old.

Born on May 15, 1948, to Jean Mangles and Edgar Danielson, Jim was a descendant of early settlers in the Suisun Valley. The family initially lived in Vallejo before moving to Fairfield and then to Jean’s childhood home on the Mangles’ ranch. From a young age, Jim displayed a strong work ethic, assisting his father with fuel deliveries starting at just 10 years old.

Throughout his childhood, Jim enjoyed riding bikes with friends, exploring orchards, and hunting for treasures. He later pursued a degree from Chico State, earning his teaching credential and returning to the Solano area to launch his career in education.

Known affectionately as “Mr. D.” to both students and staff, Jim became a beloved elementary school teacher at Elmira and Callison Elementary Schools. He was known for his engaging teaching style, which included unique activities like “silent ball” and “the map game.” His creativity was evident during open houses, where he constructed an entire Oregon Trail scene. Jim’s attention to detail extended to his impeccable penmanship, as he handwrote all of his class worksheets, demonstrating his dedication to his students’ success.

In a fortuitous twist of fate, Jim met his future wife, Dianne Cretcher, who was also a teacher. The couple enjoyed a fulfilling marriage that lasted for 38 years. They shared a deep devotion to one another, co-teaching in Jim’s classroom for three years after Dianne’s retirement. Together, they explored the natural beauty of California, from the majestic redwoods to the serene beaches, as well as the renowned wine regions of the Napa and Suisun Valleys.

Jim was known for his thoughtful gestures, often surprising Dianne with jewelry he kept in his sock drawer, ensuring he never missed an occasion to express his love. His affection was accompanied by bouquets of flowers, emphasizing the depth of his feelings.

As a father, Jim was equally dedicated. He spent countless hours helping Kailyn with her coloring books, supporting her through dance recitals, and sending handwritten letters after she moved out. His warm personality shone through in the way he engaged with others; he preferred to stay out of the spotlight but radiated joy when sharing a joke or giving a heartfelt hug.

Jim was predeceased by his parents, his sister Lauri Bailey, and sister-in-law Gloria Pickering. He is survived by his beloved wife Dianne, daughter Kailyn Danielson (married to Ryan), son Greg Heinze (married to Steven), sister Kathy Sbaffi (married to Dave), brother-in-law Bill Cretcher (married to Tilly), and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on January 8, 2026, at 1 PM at Village 360 in Suisun Valley, where friends and family are invited to celebrate Jim’s life and legacy.
