Community Mourns Loss of Jack Brown, 92, San Pedro Resident

John (Jack) Paul Brown, a beloved figure in San Pedro, passed away peacefully at the age of 92 on December 20, 2025. Surrounded by family, Jack’s departure marks the end of a life filled with rich memories and contributions to his community.

Born on March 10, 1933, to Robert and Agnes Brown in Long Beach, California, Jack fondly recalled his childhood days spent in San Pedro. He often reminisced about catching tadpoles at Averill Park and selling newspapers to sailors arriving at the port. As one of the first employees at Helen Grace Chocolates, he demonstrated a strong work ethic early on, and during World War II, he assisted his father as a Civilian Air Warden.

Jack received his education at Mary Star of the Sea Elementary School and St. Anthony’s High School in Long Beach. Before the construction of the Vincent Thomas Bridge, he would take a ferry across the harbor to attend school. His high school years were marked by his passion for sports, particularly as a distance runner on the Track and Field team, where he earned numerous accolades. Jack continued his athletic pursuits in college while obtaining a degree in Drafting.

Following his graduation, Jack joined Northrop Grumman, where he honed his skills in engineering. Eventually, he took a bold step to start his own business, employing friends and colleagues he had met throughout his career. This entrepreneurial spirit was a hallmark of his character, demonstrating his commitment to supporting those around him.

In 1969, Jack’s life took a joyous turn when he met Rita Cebula. The couple married on April 17, 1971, and together they welcomed two children: Dennis in 1972 and Julie in 1975. Their family life was rooted in strong community values, as Rita dedicated 25 years to teaching at Holy Trinity Church, where the couple remained actively involved.

Jack found pleasure in various hobbies, including gardening, sports, and DIY projects. He was known for his unique sense of humor, often making those around him laugh. Each morning began with a cup of coffee, a crossword puzzle, and a careful watch of the stock market, reflecting his lively and engaged approach to life.

He is survived by his children, Dennis and Julie, along with grandchildren Natalie and Vincent, and his sister Agnes Welsh. Jack also leaves behind many nieces and nephews who cherished their time with him. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Rita, parents Robert and Agnes, brother Robert, sister Phyllis Smith, and nephews Bob and Tom Smith.

A funeral mass will take place on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Trinity Church, with burial to follow at Green Hills Memorial Park.
