FCS Championship in Nashville Sparks Future Venue Speculation
The FCS Championship concludes tonight in Nashville, marking a significant moment for college football as the NCAA evaluates its partnership with the city. Nashville was awarded the 2026 and 2027 championship games due to renovations planned for Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas. The decision, influenced by Matt Larsen, athletic director at North Dakota State and chair of the FCS Playoff committee, has drawn a positive response, especially with thousands of fans from Montana State flocking to the city.
Anticipation is high for the championship game, with expectations of a crowd exceeding 25,000 in a venue that accommodates 35,000. Following the final whistle, the NCAA will face critical decisions regarding the event’s future locations. “After this championship game in February, we’ll open up the bids for the future sites,” stated Ty Halpin, the NCAA’s Director of the FCS Championship. He noted that several cities are observing this weekend’s events closely.
The scheduling of the title game is also under review. This year’s match marks the end of a two-year agreement between the NCAA and ESPN to host the title game on the Monday following the NFL regular season. This strategy aimed to avoid competition from other football games, a move that proved successful last year when 2.4 million viewers tuned in to watch North Dakota State’s thrilling 35-32 victory over Montana State, peaking at over 3 million viewers.
While tonight’s ratings may face challenges replicating such numbers, the playoff committee remains optimistic. “We are going to continue to work with ESPN,” Halpin explained. The scheduling conflict with the College Football Playoff (CFP) remains a pivotal factor. The CFP has until January 23 to decide on expanding to 16 teams or more for the 2026 season, which could alter the timing of the FCS championship.
Concerns have already been voiced by prominent figures in college football about the length of the season. This year, the CFP semifinals are set for January 8 and 9, with the championship game scheduled for January 19. These dates are part of a broader effort to navigate the NFL playoff schedule, which has prompted college football to schedule games on unconventional days, including Thursdays and Fridays, to avoid direct competition.
The NCAA has tentatively scheduled the 2027 championship game for January 4, which also falls on a Monday. That date and the associated television network remain uncertain for the upcoming season. Nonetheless, Halpin expressed confidence that the FCS championship holds significant television appeal, emphasizing the importance of prime scheduling. “I think the window, from a television perspective, was a no-brainer,” he remarked.
Attendance and viewer interest are closely monitored factors in determining future scheduling. Halpin highlighted that the buzz surrounding the game contributes significantly to its appeal, “What we hear from the ratings folks is, does the game look interesting? Is there buzz about it when you flip it over?” With Nashville’s vibrant atmosphere and fan engagement, the FCS Championship has undeniably left its mark, setting the stage for potential future collaborations between the NCAA and the city.
