Trump Unveils Ambitious Ski Resort Plan in War-Torn Syria
UPDATE: Donald Trump has just announced a groundbreaking plan to build a luxury ski resort in war-ravaged Syria, aiming to ease ongoing tensions between Israel and the Arab state. The White House is reportedly backing this “new economic zone” in a disputed region currently occupied by Israeli troops, which includes a Zermatt-style ski destination.
This unexpected initiative is said to be supported by Syria’s new leadership, with plans to combine the ski resort with extensive infrastructure projects such as power plants, oil pipelines, and data centers. The ambitious mega-project is proposed to rise in a formerly demilitarized zone after Israeli forces withdraw, while still providing the security guarantees that Israel insists upon.
Insiders suggest the slopes could be developed on Mount Hermon, a strategic peak in southern Syria used by Israel for surveillance and elite military training. Following the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, Israeli troops moved several miles into Syrian territory on the Golan Heights, a region that had been a UN-backed buffer zone since the 1973 Yom Kippur War. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has maintained a strong military presence in the area after the rise of Ahmed al-Sharaa, a former al-Qaeda fighter who has expressed intentions for peace with Israel while demanding the withdrawal of Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) from Syrian territory.
The announcement follows a recent meeting between Israeli and Syrian officials in Paris, mediated by U.S. representatives. An American official stated, “This economic zone will include wind farms, agriculture, the best ski mountain in the Middle East, and the Druze community that is the best at hospitality.”
This plan echoes a previous proposal from the Trump administration for a demilitarized economic zone in Ukraine’s Donbas region, indicating a broader strategy to stabilize conflict zones through economic development. The recent discussions also coincide with a newly confirmed intelligence-sharing agreement between Israel and Syria, which aims to mitigate tensions and improve security in the region.
The intelligence pact, referred to as a “joint-fusion mechanism,” is expected to be based in Amman, Jordan, overseeing southern Syria. This initiative follows violent sectarian clashes last year in Sweida province, which resulted in hundreds of deaths, some attributed to regime forces.
The U.S. State Department has commended these positive steps, emphasizing the importance of cooperation among sovereign nations. “When sovereign nations cooperate in a respectful and productive way, prosperity will be unleashed,” an official stated.
As this plan develops, the implications for regional stability could be significant. Netanyahu advocates for a humanitarian corridor in the area, but the Syrian government maintains that Sweida’s issues are internal. This ongoing dialogue is seen as a potential stepping stone towards full diplomatic relations.
In a related context, last month, the U.S. launched a series of large-scale retaliatory strikes in Syria, targeting 70 Islamic State militants. This operation involved precision airstrikes coordinated with Jordanian forces and underscores the ongoing military tensions in the region.
As this story unfolds, the international community will be watching closely. The proposed ski resort could symbolize a fresh start for Syria and foster economic growth, but it also raises questions about security, sovereignty, and the future of Israeli-Syrian relations.
