AI Commoditizes Expertise; Box CEO Urges Focus on Context Now
URGENT UPDATE: Box CEO Aaron Levie warns that AI is rapidly commoditizing expert knowledge, compelling companies to rethink their competitive strategies. In a LinkedIn post this week, Levie emphasized that businesses must focus on “context engineering” to remain relevant in an increasingly AI-driven economy.
As AI technology evolves, Levie highlighted a crucial shift: proprietary data and institutional knowledge will define the winners in this new landscape. “In a world where everyone has access to the same expert intelligence, how does a company differentiate?” he asked. His clear answer: context.
Levie pointed out that the true advantage won’t stem from smarter AI models alone, but from equipping these models with the right proprietary information—internal data, customer histories, workflows, and decision-making patterns. He stated, “Certainly it will be about how teams and employees use AI agents effectively, but the ultimate force-multiplier will be the context that the agents get.”
This pressing message resonates across Silicon Valley, as tech leaders like Andrej Karpathy of OpenAI and Tobi Lütke, CEO of Shopify, reinforce the notion that effective AI deployment hinges on context rather than merely clever prompts. They assert that creating systems, data, and workflows that provide AI the necessary context is vital for scalable AI utility.
However, Levie cautioned that integrating context into AI systems is complex. He described a phenomenon known as “context rot,” where excessive information can confuse AI models, leading them to misinterpret crucial details. “Making sure AI agents receive precise, accurate, and task-specific context—without overwhelming them—is one of the central challenges in building effective agent systems,” he explained.
The stakes are extraordinarily high. Levie forecasts that companies capable of capturing, organizing, and operationalizing their internal knowledge will experience significant boosts in productivity and output. Conversely, those that fail to adapt will struggle to serve customers competitively. “Those that don’t will find it harder and harder to serve customers competitively,” he added.
As AI continues to reshape the business landscape, the emphasis on context over sheer intelligence becomes more critical than ever. Companies must act NOW to harness their unique data and expertise, or risk being left behind in this fast-evolving market.
