URGENT UPDATE: M&T Bank has just announced plans to close eight branches located within Stop & Shop stores across Connecticut by the end of April 2024. This decision is part of the bank’s strategy to adapt to evolving customer needs and will impact several communities.

The closures will take effect on April 16 for branches in Hamden, Simsbury, Stratford, and Vernon. Specifically, the affected locations include:
– 2331 Dixwell Ave. in Hamden
– 489 Bushy Hill Road in Simsbury
– 200 E. Main St. in Stratford
– 50 Windsorville Road in Vernon

The remaining branches in Bridgeport, Milford, Westport, and Wilton will close on April 30. These locations are:
– 4531 Main St. in Bridgeport
– 1364 E. Town Road in Milford
– 1790 Post Road East in Westport
– 5 River Road in Wilton

M&T Bank will also close two additional locations at 931 Torringford St. in Torrington and 410 Reidville Drive in Waterbury, but new standalone branches are already planned for these cities.

“Our dedication to our colleagues, customers, and communities in Connecticut remains unwavering,” a spokesperson for M&T Bank stated. “By investing in new branches, we will deliver best-in-class advice and guidance that aligns with the needs of those we serve.”

The closures will not lead to layoffs, as employees from the impacted branches will be offered positions at other locations. M&T Bank, which employs around 2,100 people statewide, merged with the former People’s United Bank in 2022 and is committed to enhancing its service network.

These changes reflect a broader trend in the banking industry, with many institutions reassessing their branch networks to better serve customer preferences. M&T Bank’s proactive approach aims to improve accessibility and service across Connecticut.

For residents in these areas, the upcoming closures may raise questions about banking convenience, but the bank assures that its ATMs will remain available and that new branches are on the horizon.

Stay tuned for more updates on M&T Bank’s restructuring efforts as they unfold.
