Medical Professionals Warn of Deadly ‘Super Flu’ Outbreak

A severe outbreak of a newly identified “super flu” has raised alarms across the United States, with medical professionals reporting tragic cases, including a toddler left paralyzed by the illness. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed that at least nine children have died from the flu this season. Emergency room visits for flu-like symptoms have surged to levels not seen in nearly three decades, primarily due to a rapidly spreading strain of influenza A known as the H3N2 subclade K.

The CDC is warning that this could be one of the most brutal flu seasons in recent memory. Hospital admissions related to influenza increased by 54% from the previous week, with nearly all states experiencing ‘high’ or ‘very high’ flu activity. This alarming trend has prompted health officials to issue urgent warnings about the symptoms associated with this aggressive strain.

Understanding the Symptoms and Risks

The “super flu” is characterized by severe symptoms that include extremely high fever, debilitating fatigue, intense body and muscle aches, persistent cough, and severe headaches. Dr. Juanita Mora, a national spokesperson for the American Lung Association, elaborated on the situation during an interview with NBC Chicago. She noted, “This new strain has symptoms of really high fevers. It has a really bad cough that won’t go away, very phlegmy, and also vomiting and diarrhoea and lots of joint aches as well as muscle aches.”

One particularly heartbreaking case involves two-year-old Sarah Lopez, who spent weeks in the hospital after contracting transverse myelitis, a rare condition linked to viral infections like influenza. This condition disrupts communication between the spinal cord and the body, often resulting in paralysis. Her mother, Kenia Lopez, recounted the rapid deterioration of her daughter’s health, stating, “When I would say come here, she wouldn’t do it either. She would just throw her upper torso.”

Kenia described how, overnight, Sarah’s condition worsened. “She couldn’t sit up on her own, she couldn’t talk, she couldn’t move pretty much anything, just her head a little bit.” After initially seeking medical help, Sarah’s condition escalated, necessitating urgent transfer to Erlanger’s Children’s Hospital in Chattanooga, Tennessee. “She couldn’t move at all; she could just move her head a little bit. She was completely paralysed,” her mother explained.

Sarah required ventilator support for a week during her hospitalization. Although she has since been discharged, her recovery remains challenging as she continues to regain movement. Kenia expressed the emotional toll of the situation, saying, “The support that we’ve received is kind of what has kept me going… this is not something anybody would be able to deal with.” Tragically, Sarah had not received a flu vaccine, a critical point highlighted by health officials.

Health Officials Urge Vaccination

As the flu season progresses, experts caution that the worst may still be ahead. Dr. Cecil Bennett from Newnan Family Medicine Associates emphasized the importance of vaccination, stating, “Unfortunately, we still have about two more months of flu season that we have to go through. So it’s not too late to get the flu shot.”

According to the CDC, approximately 11 million people have already been diagnosed with the flu during this season. The organization continues to advocate for vaccination, encouraging everyone aged six months and older who has not yet been vaccinated to seek a flu shot, particularly as this dangerous strain continues to spread.
