UPDATE: Google has just announced a groundbreaking expansion of its Gemini AI chatbot, partnering with major retailers, including Walmart, Shopify, and Wayfair, to create a powerful new shopping assistant. This development was revealed on January 14, 2024, during the National Retail Federation’s annual convention in New York, which expects to draw 40,000 attendees from across the retail and technology sectors.

This innovative integration will allow customers to make instant purchases directly within the Gemini chat interface, bypassing traditional checkout processes. Users will be able to shop seamlessly from participating retailers without leaving the conversation. John Furner, Walmart’s incoming president and CEO, emphasized the significance of this shift, stating, “The transition from traditional web or app search to agent-led commerce represents the next great evolution in retail.”

The new shopping feature transforms how consumers interact with e-commerce. For instance, if a user asks for ski gear, Gemini will provide recommendations from partner retailers. Customers who link their Walmart and Gemini accounts will receive tailored suggestions based on past purchases, enhancing the shopping experience. Any purchases made through the chatbot can be effortlessly added to existing Walmart or Sam’s Club online shopping carts.

This move comes as Google, OpenAI, and Amazon race to create AI-powered shopping tools that streamline the consumer journey from browsing to purchasing. A previous collaboration between OpenAI and Walmart allowed ChatGPT users to shop instantly, further highlighting the competitive landscape of AI in retail.

According to Salesforce, AI influenced an astounding $272 billion—or 20%—of global retail sales during the holiday shopping season, underscoring the technology’s growing impact on consumer behavior. Currently, Google’s AI shopping features in Gemini will be available exclusively to users in the U.S., with plans for international expansion in the coming months.

The goal of these AI-assisted shopping tools is to simplify the search process. Instead of typing keywords, users can engage in conversational queries, refining their searches through dialogue. “I’m under no false belief that there’s going to be a snap of the finger and then all of a sudden, agentic commerce is going to get everywhere,” cautioned Mike Edmonds, PayPal’s vice president of agentic commerce, highlighting the gradual evolution of this technology.

Shopify’s CEO Tobi Lutke echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the importance of retaining the human touch in shopping experiences. “Many people enjoy having a personal shopper who understands and fits their budget,” he stated, reaffirming that customers should maintain control over their purchases while benefiting from AI assistance.

In addition to these advancements, Walmart is also expanding its drone delivery service to an additional 150 stores in partnership with Wing, a division of Alphabet. This expansion will elevate Walmart’s drone delivery capabilities to 270 locations by 2027, covering a vast area from Los Angeles to Miami.

As the National Retail Federation conference continues, discussions around AI’s role in retail and consumer behavior will be front and center, shaping the future of e-commerce. Keep an eye on this developing story as Google and its partners push the boundaries of shopping technology, reshaping how consumers interact with retail in real-time.
