NFL Coaching Carousel: Teams Search for New Leaders

The NFL coaching landscape is in significant flux as teams seek new leadership following the conclusion of the wild-card round of the playoffs. With eight vacancies—representing 25 percent of the league—several franchises are actively interviewing candidates for head coaching positions.

Coaching Interviews Heat Up

Among the prominent candidates, John Harbaugh met with Chris Mara, a longtime executive with the New York Giants, last Sunday. The informal meeting took place at Harbaugh’s home in Baltimore and has been characterized as a lunch discussion, according to The Athletic. Shortly thereafter, the Atlanta Falcons confirmed they had conducted the first official interview with Harbaugh since his dismissal from the Baltimore Ravens.

The Tennessee Titans are also making strides in their search. On Monday, they interviewed former Atlanta Falcons coach Raheem Morris and have a packed schedule for the week. Other candidates include Jeff Hafley, the Green Bay Packers’ defensive coordinator, scheduled for an interview on Tuesday, along with former Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel on Wednesday and former Giants coach Brian Daboll on Friday.

Several assistant coaches are also in the mix, particularly those whose teams have been eliminated from playoff contention. Notable names include Hafley, Jaguars defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile, and Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith.

Notable Coaching Changes and Requests

Harbaugh, with an impressive history including a Super Bowl championship, is seen as one of the most sought-after candidates this coaching cycle. Teams such as the Giants, Falcons, Titans, Dolphins, and Browns are reportedly considering him for their top position.

Another significant figure is Kevin Stefanski, the former head coach of the Cleveland Browns, who has already met with several teams. His tenure was marked by a record of 45-56 over six seasons, which ultimately led to his dismissal. Stefanski has interviewed with the Ravens, Raiders, Giants, and Titans.

The Atlanta Falcons have been particularly active in their search. They have interviewed multiple candidates, including Morris and Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak. They have also requested interviews with Vance Joseph, the Broncos’ defensive coordinator, and Ejiro Evero, the Panthers’ defensive coordinator.

In Baltimore, the Ravens have concluded interviews with candidates like Kliff Kingsbury, the former offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders, and Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver. They are also looking to interview Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady and Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores.

The Cleveland Browns continue their search with interviews with several coaches, including former Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel. They have reached out to Harbaugh, who has historical ties to the franchise, having grown up as a Browns fan.

The Miami Dolphins have recently hired Jon-Eric Sullivan as their new general manager, replacing Chris Grier, who was let go after nine and a half seasons. The team is expected to focus on securing a head coach soon after solidifying their front office.

The New York Giants have also been busy, interviewing Morris, former Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce, and Broncos special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi. They have requested interviews with Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo and others, focusing on how candidates plan to develop their quarterback situation, particularly after starting rookie Jaxson Dart in much of the previous season.

As the coaching carousel spins, teams are making calculated moves to secure leadership that can lead them to success in the upcoming seasons. The next few weeks will be pivotal in shaping the future of several franchises as they seek to find the right fit for their coaching positions.
