Project Fire Buddies Wins $60K Gala at Hollywood Casino Joliet

UPDATE: Project Fire Buddies has just been awarded a gala event valued at $60,000 at the new Hollywood Casino Joliet, marking a significant boost for the nonprofit dedicated to uplifting critically ill children. This urgent announcement comes as the organization prepares to expand its reach and impact across the region.

Founded by firefighter and paramedic Kurt DeGroot a decade ago in Oak Forest, Illinois, Project Fire Buddies caters to children battling cancer by providing personalized gifts, outings, and ongoing support. With over 170 chapters spanning 15 states, the nonprofit has raised vital funds through community support to enhance the lives of these young patients.

The gala, set to be hosted at the casino’s new 10,000-square-foot event center, will accommodate 400 guests and feature food, beverages, and audiovisual support, thanks to the casino’s commitment of 40 hours of volunteer assistance. “Hollywood Joliet received dozens of entries from local nonprofits, and Project Fire Buddies stood out for its long-standing commitment and positive impact,” stated Ruben Warren, vice president and general manager of the casino.

DeGroot expressed his gratitude, stating, “For them to do that and select us was an absolute honor. It shows they care about the most vulnerable in their community.” This event is expected to take place in the fall and will not only raise donations but also foster connections between families and the community.

The organization is also gearing up for its own annual gala on February 7, 2024, at the Tinley Park Convention Center, anticipating 1,500 attendees and including 36 tickets for families directly affected by illness. DeGroot emphasized the event’s dual purpose: “Sometimes kids are healthy enough to come, and sometimes it’s a night out for mom and dad—either way, I feel like they deserve it.”

Driven by a passion for helping children, DeGroot initially involved his family in fundraising efforts, even sacrificing their own holiday gifts to support the cause. “This would have failed were it not for my family,” he noted.

As the nonprofit continues to grow, it remains focused on its mission of bringing joy to children in need. The upcoming gala at Hollywood Casino Joliet is set to be a significant milestone in their journey to make a difference in the lives of these brave kids.
