Forum Dvorah Demands Clear Support for Women in IDF Combat Roles
On Sunday, a significant protest unfolded during a military ceremony when dozens of soldiers and officers from the Golani Brigade walked out in response to female soldiers singing. This incident is part of a broader debate regarding the role of women in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and has prompted the NGO Forum Dvorah to call for definitive support from high-ranking officials.
Protest Highlights Growing Tensions
In a statement made on Wednesday, Forum Dvorah urged Defense Minister Israel Katz and IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Eyal Zamir to publicly affirm their support for women in combat roles. This comes amid a backdrop of increasing criticism from certain political factions, including comments from Noam party leader Avi Maoz, who has voiced opposition to female military service.
The controversy surrounding the singing of female soldiers has resurfaced debates within the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee (FADC). The committee is currently negotiating compromises with ultra-Orthodox parties concerning the roles of women in the IDF, which may lead to greater separation of haredim (ultra-Orthodox Jews) serving in the military.
Forum Dvorah Responds to Criticism
According to Forum Dvorah, the pushback against women serving in the IDF serves as a distraction from the ongoing discussions about the haredi exemption bill, which grants some ultra-Orthodox individuals exemptions from military service. The NGO emphasizes that women currently represent 20% of the IDF’s combat soldiers and serve across various branches, except for the IDF Rabbinate.
Notably, on October 7, 2023, many female combat soldiers engaged in intense fighting against Hamas forces, demonstrating their capabilities and commitment on the front lines. Forum Dvorah stated that any assertions questioning the effectiveness of women as combat fighters are “cynical political stunts.” The organization criticized the absence of operational evidence to support such claims.
Furthermore, the NGO cautioned that silence from military leadership regarding the recent criticisms could be interpreted as tacit agreement, potentially undermining the morale of female combat soldiers and the IDF’s overall effectiveness.
As of now, neither Katz nor Zamir has publicly addressed the protest or the broader issues involved. Historically, Zamir has shown support for women in combat roles and has indicated plans to establish new tank combat units open to female soldiers. This suggests that while there may be voices of dissent, a comprehensive campaign against women in combat roles is unlikely.
Interestingly, a recent survey indicates that up to 40% of women in the wider religious-Zionist community opt to join the IDF, despite the option to pursue national service instead. The issue of women singing at military ceremonies remains contentious, with past arrangements allowing religious men opposed to the practice to leave the venue discreetly before such performances.
It remains unclear whether the organizers of the recent ceremony consulted with the broader Golani Brigade regarding the inclusion of female singers. As the debate continues, the impact on military culture and gender dynamics within the IDF will be closely observed.
