Ruby Ericson Crowned 2026 Klondike Kate at Winter Carnival Contest

Ruby Ericson from White Bear Lake has been named the 2026 Klondike Kate, triumphing in a spirited competition held on January 7, 2026, at the Inwood Oaks Event Center in Oakdale, Minnesota. The event, part of the annual St. Paul Winter Carnival, celebrates the legacy of the historical entertainer Kathleen Rockwell, known for her vibrant performances during the Gold Rush era.

In front of an enthusiastic audience of several hundred attendees, Ericson delivered a powerful rendition of “Bring on the Men” from the musical “Jekyll & Hyde.” Her performance captivated both the judges and the crowd, embodying the spirit of fun and frivolity that Klondike Kate represents.

Behind the Competition

The contest featured four talented women competing for the coveted title. A nine-member panel of judges, including former Klondike Kates and local musicians such as Wayne Hamilton and Cate Fierro, evaluated the performances. The event was emceed by KSTP-TV anchor Matt Belanger, with live piano accompaniment provided by musical director Dave Swanson.

Ericson’s fellow competitors included Kat Connery, a voice actor and fiber artist from Robbinsdale, and Bonnie Lopez from West St. Paul, each demonstrating their unique talents throughout the evening. Although first-time competitor Ericka Golden did not reach the final round, her performances of songs by Guns N’ Roses and Aerosmith stood out, showcasing a different side of the competition’s musical repertoire.

Ericson’s Journey

For Ericson, this victory marks her third year competing for the title. “I love being onstage,” she expressed after receiving her sash. “The gals that I was singing with tonight are so like family, so it’s fun to share the stage with them.”

Reflecting on her early inspiration, Ericson recalled her admiration for Mae West, whose sassy persona left an impression on her as a child. “Probably when I was 6 years old… I thought that would be someone fun to emulate!” she said.

Singing has played a significant role in Ericson’s life for decades. A member of Sweet Adelines International since 1987, she has also participated in contemporary church ensembles and has experience as a karaoke host. “Singing frees my soul and takes me out of my shell,” she shared. “When I have moments of sadness, music just lifts me.”

Looking ahead, Ericson is eager to embrace the legacy of Klondike Kate. “I would love to inspire young ladies to take on this challenge and become Klondike Kate, too, or even pursue a career in music,” she stated. Her vision is to encourage them to follow their dreams, no matter what they may be.

The St. Paul Winter Carnival is set to begin on January 22, 2026, offering a range of festivities that celebrate community and creativity, with Ruby Ericson now at the forefront as Klondike Kate.
