Netflix Partners with Studio MAPPA for Exclusive Anime Projects
Netflix has announced a significant partnership with Studio MAPPA, a leading name in the anime industry, to create new animated projects. This collaboration positions Netflix to enhance its offerings in the anime sector, which has been gaining substantial traction among streaming platforms.
The announcement was made earlier this week, stating that Netflix will become the exclusive outlet for original anime produced by MAPPA. This studio is renowned for its work on popular series such as Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, and the final season of Attack on Titan. While the partnership does not guarantee that existing series like Jujutsu Kaisen or Hell’s Paradise will be exclusive to Netflix, it opens the door for future seasons to be available on the platform.
In a press release, Manabu Otsuka, President of MAPPA, expressed confidence in the partnership’s potential impact on the anime landscape. He stated, “We have worked with Netflix on various projects in the past, but this expanded partnership is based on MAPPA’s core belief in being an independent studio — both creatively and in business.” Otsuka emphasized the importance of Japanese animation studios taking the initiative in understanding global audience needs and developing projects accordingly.
Netflix’s Vice President of Content in Japan, Kaata Sakamoto, echoed Otsuka’s sentiments. He remarked, “MAPPA is a remarkable studio that has continuously taken on bold challenges and achieved unprecedented forms of expression. By combining MAPPA’s unique approach to anime production with Netflix’s global reach, we hope to further expand the possibilities of anime.”
The partnership is noteworthy as it builds on previous successful collaborations between Netflix and MAPPA, including titles like Kakegurui Twin and Ranma 1/2. With new seasons of popular series such as Jujutsu Kaisen and Hell’s Paradise set to premiere in January 2024, fans are eager to see how this alliance will influence future content. Additionally, the anticipated return of Dorohedoro later this year raises expectations for continued exclusive offerings from Netflix.
This strategic move underscores Netflix’s commitment to strengthening its position in the competitive anime market. As platforms like Crunchyroll and HIDIVE specialize in anime, Netflix aims to diversify its content library, appealing to a broader audience.
With the anime genre’s growing popularity, the collaboration between Netflix and MAPPA could have far-reaching implications for both companies and the industry at large. The partnership not only promises to deliver new and exciting content to fans worldwide but also highlights the increasing significance of anime in global entertainment.
