Indie Developer Launches LORT, A New Fantasy Roguelike on Steam
The indie game development team, Big Distraction, has launched its new title, LORT, on Steam in early access. This roguelike adventure allows players to team up in groups of up to eight as they navigate a vibrant fantasy world filled with magic, goblins, and unique humor. The release comes as a response to the absence of similar games since the popular Risk of Rain 2 debuted in 2020.
In a statement on social media, the developers expressed their motivation behind creating LORT, stating, “We kept waiting for another Risk of Rain 2. It never came. So we quit AAA and made LORT.” The game’s design mirrors some elements of Gearbox Software’s roguelike, but introduces new features such as a giant crow riding a van, retaining the spirit of cooperative gameplay while embracing a whimsical aesthetic.
Gameplay Features and Community Engagement
LORT invites players to loot and craft upgrades while facing off against challenging bosses. Currently, the game offers four procedurally generated biomes, a variety of playable characters, and nine weapon types. Notably, one character is humorously referred to as the “Muscle Mummy Statue.” The developers have confirmed plans for future updates, including the addition of daggers, new power-ups, and a rogue class resembling a frog-turned-assassin, all aimed for release before summer 2023.
The team has emphasized their commitment to community feedback, stating, “We have a lot of ideas for LORT. But while we like our ideas, we ultimately want to make what you and the rest of the community want.” This approach reflects their past experiences on titles like Fortnite and Rocket League, where player input significantly shaped game development.
User reviews on Steam have been mostly positive, highlighting the game’s depth in meta-progression and build potential. Players appreciate the cooperative experience, but some have noted that LORT may not be ideally suited for solo play, and the absence of matchmaking could present challenges for individuals looking to join games.
Future Developments and Cultural References
As the developers continue to engage with the community, they are open to evolving the game based on player suggestions. The roadmap also hints at a variety of additional content that aims to enhance gameplay and overall experience.
The title LORT, while shrouded in mystery regarding its full meaning, adds to the game’s quirky charm. Its humorous power-ups, such as “Trophy of Swole” and “Boomer’s Blessing,” resonate with the playful tone that the developers want to convey. As LORT gains traction, it will be interesting to see how it carves out its niche within the growing roguish genre and whether it can attract fans of games like Risk of Rain 2.
With its engaging gameplay, community-driven development, and whimsical humor, LORT promises to be a noteworthy addition to the roguelike landscape, appealing to both long-time fans and newcomers alike.
