Hochul Raises Over $30 Million, Outpacing Rivals for Governor

UPDATE: New fundraising reports reveal that New York Governor Kathy Hochul has raised an astonishing $30 million for her reelection campaign, placing her significantly ahead of both primary and Republican challengers. This surge in campaign cash positions Hochul with over $20 million to spend as the race heats up, a staggering 16 times the amount of her closest rivals.

The latest data, covering the fundraising period ending in January, showcases Hochul’s dominance in the race for governor. “The governor is in this interesting situation where anything from the left has been bolstered by the public financing system,” said Blair Horner of the New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG). He emphasized that the new system complicates Hochul’s ability to balance fundraising against wealthy Republican donors.

Despite the new regulations that establish public financing for campaigns and lower contribution limits, Hochul remains unimpeded in accepting donations from individuals with business interests before the state. This loophole has raised concerns regarding the integrity of her campaign financing.

Recent investigations by NY1 highlighted instances of Hochul’s campaign receiving large contributions from individuals connected to state business. For example, the CEO of a real estate development firm, who contributed the maximum amount to Hochul’s campaign, was present at a press event announcing a new state-backed affordable housing project in Yonkers earlier this year.

“What this is all about is business interests and people with business before the state trying to influence the governor and influence state policy to their advantage, and it’s all legal,” cautioned John Kaehny of Reinvent Albany. This sentiment underscores the ethical challenges that Hochul faces as she navigates her campaign amidst intense scrutiny.

In response to these allegations, a spokesperson for Hochul asserted,

“The Governor approaches every decision through the lens of what is best for New Yorkers. Campaign contributions have no influence on government decisions.”
