Netflix Delays Alex Honnold’s Skyscraper Climb Due to Rain
World-renowned climber Alex Honnold has postponed his highly anticipated ascent of Taipei 101 due to unfavorable weather conditions. Originally scheduled for 9:00 a.m. local time on March 15, 2024, the climb was intended to be broadcast globally as part of Netflix’s live sports programming in a special event titled Skyscraper Live.
As rain fell steadily across Taipei on the morning of the event, it became evident that Honnold’s daring attempt to scale one of Asia’s tallest buildings could not proceed safely. Just 30 minutes before the climb was to commence, Netflix announced that the event would be delayed by one day, hoping for clearer skies on March 16, 2024.
The decision to postpone was left entirely in Honnold’s hands. A representative for Netflix stated, “Ultimately, this will be Alex’s decision. How is he doing and how is he feeling about the conditions?” As conditions deteriorated, it became clear that Honnold deemed the slick, wet surface of the 1,667-foot skyscraper too dangerous for an ascent without ropes or safety nets.
The postponement highlights the significant risks associated with Honnold’s planned climb. Although climbing experts have noted that the geometric structure of Taipei 101 presents a relatively straightforward challenge compared to Honnold’s previous feats—such as the iconic ascent of El Capitan, documented in the Oscar-winning film Free Solo—the height of the building makes any attempt a remarkable and perilous undertaking.
Local anticipation had built for weeks leading up to the event, with thousands expected to gather at the base of the tower to witness Honnold’s ascent. However, the rainy weather left the streets of Taipei quieter than anticipated, disappointing many fans who had hoped to see their idol take on the challenge.
As the world waits for the rescheduled climb, the eyes of sports enthusiasts and climbing aficionados alike will be on Taipei, hoping for better weather conditions and a successful attempt on March 16.
