Gary Schmidt Celebrates 20 Years of Musical Mastery in Loveland
Gary Schmidt, a Loveland resident and accomplished pianist, is set to perform at the Rialto Theater Center on January 30, 2024, marking his 20th annual concert at the venue. Over the past two decades, Schmidt has cultivated a dedicated global fan base, largely thanks to his engaging performances and innovative use of streaming platforms. His music, which blends classical and contemplative styles, has resonated with listeners around the world.
Schmidt’s rise to prominence began when he connected with Will Ackerman, the founder of Windham Hill Records, who produced his first album. The advent of streaming services like Spotify and Pandora further broadened his audience reach. Recently, he celebrated a significant milestone, achieving over 1 million streams on Pandora. “At any moment, 24 hours a day, someone is listening to my music,” Schmidt reflected, expressing gratitude for the accessibility of his work.
From Humble Beginnings to a Beloved Tradition
Schmidt’s initial concert at the Rialto was a leap of faith, as he was uncertain about the response he would receive. “The Rialto is a treasure for the city of Loveland,” he remarked, appreciating the venue’s excellent acoustics. In the early days, he brought his own piano, as the theater lacked the space to store one. The success of that first event sparked a tradition, and Schmidt has continued to perform each winter since.
While his early concerts primarily featured classical compositions, Schmidt has gradually integrated his original works into his performances. For the upcoming concert, he plans to showcase a diverse repertoire, including George Gershwin’s iconic “Rhapsody in Blue,” pieces by Couperin, Chopin, and Debussy, as well as some of his own compositions.
A Musical Journey Rooted in Passion
Schmidt’s passion for music was ignited at the age of six when he listened to a piano record in Canada. Without access to formal lessons, he taught himself and eventually earned admission to the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. His philosophy, “Enhancing life through music,” has guided his approach, as his meditative tunes often find their way into yoga studios and relaxation playlists.
Having lived in Loveland for nearly 30 years, Schmidt has developed a deep affection for the city and its support for the arts. “I just love it here,” he stated, highlighting the community’s appreciation for cultural endeavors. In addition to performing, he teaches piano lessons, sharing his knowledge with aspiring musicians.
Apart from music, Schmidt has a background in rock climbing and served as a climbing guide in his youth. The proximity to Rocky Mountain National Park further solidified his decision to settle in Loveland.
This year’s concert promises to be a memorable celebration of Schmidt’s musical journey. Tickets for the performance, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Rialto Theater Center, are priced at $25 and can be purchased by calling 970-970-2120 or visiting Schmidt’s website at garyschmidtmusic.com.
As Schmidt prepares for this special anniversary, he reflects on the evolution of his music and the connections he has forged with his audience. His journey from a self-taught musician to an acclaimed artist serves as an inspiring testament to the power of perseverance and passion in the pursuit of one’s dreams.
