A five-year-old dog named Della has spent nearly 644 days at the Quad City Animal Welfare Center in Illinois, patiently awaiting a permanent home. Despite her history of multiple adoptions and returns, Della remains hopeful for a family that can meet her needs.

Della, a mix of husky and pit bull, first arrived at the shelter in 2022 as part of a transport from an overcrowded facility. Initially struggling to adapt, she soon revealed her affectionate personality, enjoying belly rubs, snuggles, and showering staff with kisses. Cameron Johnson, the shelter’s community outreach coordinator, described her journey as tragic but inspiring, emphasizing that Della has “spent more of her life in shelters than in an actual home.”

Unfortunately, Della has been returned to the shelter three times, with each adoption ending due to the families’ inability to fulfill her requirements. Johnson noted that adopting Della began with the best intentions, but ultimately, the families could not provide the attention and care she needs.

As Johnson stated, “As much as our team and volunteers love her unconditionally, a shelter is not a home.” Currently, Della is back at the shelter, but the team remains hopeful that the right family is out there for her.

Understanding Della’s Needs

Della’s adoption challenges stem from her specific requirements. She needs to be the only pet in a household with adults, as well as an owner who can meet her high-energy demands. Huskies are known for their athleticism and require significant physical activity to thrive. According to VCA Animal Hospitals, daily exercise, such as long walks, jogs, or interactive play, is essential for their well-being.

Johnson emphasized the importance of continuing Della’s training, something she eagerly participates in each day at the shelter. “She has been through so much, and we can’t wait to see her thrive in a home of her own,” he said. The shelter’s priority is to ensure that her next home can support her lively spirit and provide the lifelong commitment she deserves.

In a recent plea for help, the Quad City Animal Welfare Center shared Della’s story on social media, hoping to connect her with potential adopters. On January 10, 2024, the shelter encouraged people to share her story, describing her as “perfect” and “beautiful.”

Individuals interested in adopting Della or learning more about her can contact the Quad City Animal Welfare Center for further information.
