Kristýna Kaltounková Shines as Sirens Eye Playoff Push
The New York Sirens are reaping the rewards of their decision to select Kristýna Kaltounková first overall in the 2025 PWHL draft. The talented forward has quickly become a standout player in her rookie season, showcasing impressive skills and determination on the ice. Under the guidance of coach Greg Fargo, who previously coached her at Colgate University, Kaltounková has emerged as a pivotal player for the franchise.
Halfway through the season, Kaltounková is making headlines with a career-best four-game point streak. As the league’s leading scorer with 11 goals, she stands poised to challenge the scoring record for a first-year player, currently held by teammate Sarah Fillier with 13 goals from last season. The Sirens will have to wait until the season resumes on February 26 to see if Kaltounková can achieve this milestone, along with the overall single-season record of 20 goals set by Natalie Spooner in 2024.
Olympic Aspirations and Midseason Highlights
As the PWHL goes on Olympic break, Kaltounková is one of six Sirens selected to represent their countries at the 2026 Milano Cortina Games. This will mark her Olympic debut for Czechia. Other players making their Olympic appearances include Fillier with Team Canada, as well as Kristin O’Neill and Kayle Osborne, both participating in their first Winter Games. Additionally, Maja Nylen Persson of Sweden and Nicole Vallario from Switzerland have also been chosen to compete.
Reflecting on the first half of the season, Kaltounková has not only established herself as the MVP but is also a frontrunner for the Rookie of the Year award. Fellow rookie Casey O’Brien, the third overall pick in 2025, deserves an honorable mention, contributing 11 points with four goals and seven assists.
Veteran player Micah Zandee-Hart has played a crucial role in stabilizing the Sirens’ defense. She decided to remain with the team rather than returning to her hometown to play for expansion Vancouver, becoming a respected leader both on and off the ice.
Season Performance and Key Moments
The Sirens have experienced a mix of commendable victories and challenging losses this season. One of their standout moments was a 2-1 victory against the Montréal Victoire on January 18, which showcased their resilience against one of the league’s top teams. Despite not being their most dominant win, it highlighted the team’s potential in a neutral site game that attracted a record crowd.
Conversely, the Sirens have faced difficulties against league leaders Boston Fleet and the second-place Minnesota Frost. The most disappointing loss occurred on December 6, when they suffered a 4-0 shutout against the Vancouver Goldeneyes, failing to recover after conceding three goals in the first period.
As the team prepares for the second half of the season, the focus remains on building momentum and capitalizing on their strengths. With Kaltounková leading the charge, the Sirens are optimistic about their playoff aspirations and the future of the franchise.
